Which F&B blue for a loft room for teen boys?

Just wondering if anyone has painted a loft room for teen boys and chosen a F&B blue that they would recommend? Was wondering if Parma Gray would be best. Think we’ll have mid grey carpet if that makes a difference.

Or just value any opinions! Thank you.

It’s quite a personal thing... one of my DSs had Stiffkey Blue in his loft room (on one wall only). He absolutely loved that colour, but after he moved out his brother soon replaced it with a ridiculously vibrant yellow, as according to him Stiffkey Blue was proper depressing 😂

Does you DS have a preference for the type of blue he might like? F&B do some nice light blues, as well as good mid-blues. Personally I have my eye on Oval Room Blue or DeNimes but that may not be what you/ him have in mind at all 🤔

Thank you for your reply! I absolutely love Oval Room Blue. It’s the colour of our sitting room (north facing) and I love it so much. Boys not that interested so I was hoping to make an executive decision Wink. I have read on here that light blue is great for loft rooms and was just wondering which one would be best. Without being too cold. I hadn’t thought of the one wall thing. Might be quite good for a loft room! Thanks

Ds has light blue in his loft room, bottom half only (sort of a line following the height of the eaves wall) and I think it’s really nice! The loft playroom/den is pitch blue which worked well as we wanted a dark blue but all the standard dark blues look so much darker with the low ceilings. Pic attached

This is light blue (on both the wall and chest of drawers.. had a lot leftover!)

Thank you so much for these photos. I love Light Blue there. I’m also now wondering about Borrowed Light. Any thoughts, anyone?

It will be in an incredibly well lit room - south facing loft conversion with large dormer and velux. Don’t want it to look washed out!

I have Borrowed Light in a north facing room, where it looks very airy, clean and fresh. I’m sure it’d be lovely in a south facing room too, but probably worth getting a tester.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 12/02/2021 20:12

Think you’re right about a tester. I always want a short cut but know you just have to get the testers and see it in situ. Might try and narrow it down to 3 or 4 and do the tester before the work starts in the loft so I know in advance.

Any more suggestions very welcome!

How about Dix Blue? I'm thinking about it for our bedroom.

TornadoOfSouls · 12/02/2021 23:06

I would not use Parma Gray with a light or mid grey carpet. Borrowed Light would be better, although it is quite light.

Another vote for F&B light blue.
We have it in light loft room.
It looks so much nicer on walls than on tester card where it looks quite dull and sludgy. But on walls it's lovely.

jamidays · 12/02/2021 23:54

Does it have to be F&B

mootymoo · 13/02/2021 00:09

Just show them the b&q colour chart, own brand paint is fine for the loft!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 13/02/2021 08:54

Thanks all. Appreciate the steer on Parma Gray not going with a grey carpet. I’ll definitely go with the tester pot route, although feeling quietly confident about Light Blue. Possibly with a dark wall if I feel it needs a more grown up vibe.
We don’t have to have grey carpet - I’m not a fan of grey and got it nowhere else in the house, but thought it the most practical with teen boys - and I’ll hardly be going up there!
Yes to F&B. The two times I’ve gone for other paint in this house, I’ve regretted it. I don’t get bored and redecorate regularly - I like to take my time, chose something I love and keep it for 10+ years with maybe a freshen at some point.

Forgot to say about Dix Blue. Go for it! We have green blue in our room and it is the best colour - I couldn’t line it more. Dix is just a bit bluer I think, whereas I like the greener tint.
I wanted to stay on the blue / grey side rather than the blue / green side of colour for the loft though.

I know you said about not other paints but have you tried Little Greene paints. They are really good too. My DS has a loft room and I am currently looking at Celestial Blue which has a bit of a Scandi vibe to it.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 13/02/2021 09:22

Good point! I would be up for trying Little Greene, actually. Will take a look at celestial blue now. Thank you.

I’m always amazed at the number of people who seem to have an instant recall of paint names from Farrow & Ball. Do you all study them in your spare time or are you all interior designers who only work with F&B paints?
I’ve just had my living room painted and haven’t got a clue what the name is of the paint I chose... but I think it was Dulux 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Honeywort · 13/02/2021 09:32

I really love borrowed light and have it in my son’s east facing bedroom. I think it’s a really calm, beautiful shade. But it might be a bit pale in a very well lit, bright room - definitely go for tester pot first.

Soontobe60 · 13/02/2021 09:47

When I decorated my bedrooms, we selected the colour we wanted from a fusion, took it to B&Q and they made it up with Falspar paint. It turned out to be a perfect match. The decorator said it was a good quality paint to work with and its certainly stood the test of time. I cant compare though as I’ve never used F&B paint.
Crazzzycat · 13/02/2021 10:19

@soontobe60 Compared to brands like Dulux, Farrow and Ball only do a small number of colours, so it’s not actually that hard to know the F&B colour chart inside out. That would be impossible to do for Dulux.

We have Oval Room blue in our loft room with a south-facing dormer and it's stunning. Really love it.

Borrowed Light is our hallway colour, all through the house. It's very nice but can read grey and quite cold in some lights, I'm considering repainting in a warmer colour.

ThePlantsitter · 13/02/2021 16:26

DD has Fired Earth Day by the Sea in her loft room and it makes us all happy whenever we go in there.

Unfucked · 13/02/2021 16:33

Our sitting room is Light Blue. It’s a greyish greenish colour!

I love Borrowed Light - one of my favourites. That said, I have just discovered Ethereal Blue from Edward Bulmer (currently trying out samples to unfuck our hallway) and on the basis of my A3 sample at least, that’s my new favourite blue.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 13/02/2021 19:59

Thank you so much for all the replies - i really appreciate them. I know there are far more pressing things, although that’s partly why I’m into all this at the moment. A very pleasant distraction from life. which is pretty tough right now.

V interesting about oval room blue. Hadn’t considered that as we’ve got it downstairs. I love the Day at the Sea, but might be a bit intense for that I’m after.

I’m back to being confused about Light Blue. It sounds like it might be too green.

Is it the class that all warm blues are green-toned and cool blues are whitish? What about grey? Where does that fit in? Also, are paler colours supposed to look more intense in large areas? Think I might need to swot up on some basic info!

Look at Little Greene and Paint and paper library, l prefer their paints to F&B, as my decorator. Better coverage and more choice.
