Something about it just doesn't look quite right, so any ideas on how to improve this arch would be very welcome. Thanks!

Fill it in. It looks like a botch job and has no elegance. The lines all wrong.

WillowintheUK · 10/02/2021 20:57

Yeah, I agree, proportions are wrong. I assume it was added later. I think fill it in too.

Aww I wouldn’t fill it in, but I like trying to embrace quirky changes to my old house where possible. It’s all part of the house’s story. It does look skewwhiff - but tbh all the straight lines of the door frame and the skirting don’t seem quite perfect to my eye either.

How about painting it dark inside to disguise the wonkiness slightly (it’ll be difficult to see the different sides & back), dark ties in with the worktop, and use the space to display some bright/bold/metallic asymmetrical objets d’art or perhaps a small collection you might have that would work there? Asymmetry being the key, don’t try to make any display even or it will highlight the sqwonk!

The top bit isn't arched enough, so the proportions are all to cock.

I could live with it by filling the top section with plants or nicknacks - different sizes & definitely no symmetry - to soften the line, but then I live overseas in a rented villa & am all too used to compromising & disguising stuff.

If it was my own house I think I'd fill it in. It's definitely not adding anything as a feature.

Fill it in, or have it squared off.

Is the top rounded bit of the arch glass ? and if so for a purpose - i.e. to let more light in ? How does it look from the other room ? It doesn't look right I agree , so

  1. if you like the arch shape take that door top height cross beam off and get someone to make the whole arch seamless & more pleasing from skirting upwards through to next room

Or 2) I would ( if you can ) - take the doorway walls up so you have a very tall rectangular doorway into the next room by making the arch rectangular & getting rid of that cross piece - but no idea whether that is feasible without proper structural work .

  1. if not glass and you would like dark coloured paint on that wall - just paint it all over for the while and yes stick something in it

If I'm honest if I couldn't do 2) and no light lost - I'd fill it in . But am very curious to know why original people did it - so maybe just their taste or is it a light thing ?

That aside @Sorbustree123 - once you walk through the Narnia entrance you have to the room beyond looks like a lovey sized room - so that's really nice.

Monty27 · 12/02/2021 05:47

The photo doesn't show the context to the adjoining rooms.
It doesn't hurt my eyes from what I can see. For sure it's not perfect but I I like that about it

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and suggestions! Lots of think about but in the meantime we've place some houseplants on the shelf to help with the 'skewwhiff / sqwonk' lines, @LemonViolet love your use of those words!

Is that a load bearing wall?
If so I would be a bit worried that it doesn’t have a sufficient lintel as the gap above is very narrow.

AlwaysLatte · 12/02/2021 11:29

Another one for filling it in! It doesn't add anything IMO.
