F&B Hardwick White - First coat and half love it / half terrified!

I just started painting my hall in this colour. I am getting scared! I kind of love it and kind of confused. Its khaki brown but with the second coat is turning grey.

What do I put with this to make it amazing? We have a main door, room doors and door trim and I need to do the treads on the stairs and pick a runner colour.

Anyone used this and can allay my fears or give any tips?

It takes a good 3/4 coats to get a good feel for the tone. Did you prime the walls first?

Alwayscheerful · 10/02/2021 00:19

Hardwick white is the most beautiful colour.

Have you used Hardwick White on the walls or on your woodwork ? Skirting , door frames and doors?

Have you looked on Instagram for #hardwickwhite? You might find some inspiration on there? I just looked it up and it looks lovely. You can also Dm F&B through Instagram and they’re very helpful

Hardwick White is a particular favourite of mine.

It’s a great way of drawing colour from the natural world into your home.

Great choice!

It belongs almost to the middle of the Yellow Hue Family.

You can use classical colour harmonies to give you ideas of which colours will work alongside it.

Look at what a great foil it is for all these fabulous colours!

You will also find it within colours of stone, moss, lichen and other greenery in a garden.

Just as happy amongst these - as the more vibrant floral punches!

Thanks all, I am feeling a lot better seeing it in daylight today and after it has dried.

We are on coat one so the green browny yellow was certainly shining through but we can see in areas of thicker application that it is in fact turning grey. I think I need to change the light shades and the light bulbs to white or bright light rather than warm yellow to stop the evening sludge effect.

We have painted the skirting, panelling, dado, and up to the ceiling. We are keeping the door trim and doors in white - need to pick the right white to go with it.

Then we have a full size glazed framing and door which we need to paint - not sure whether to go white to match the other doors, or darker to 'lighten' the hardwick.

Not sure whether to paint the whole of the stairs in a darker colour to lighten the hardwick or whether to just paint the treads to add a contrast.

I am struggling with the hallway. Its our first home and all the other rooms seemed relatively simple, but hallways have so many edges and interjoining parts its becoming a bit of a mine field.

I love all those colour combos Collete.

We do have very bright colours in the rest of the house so a bright colour wouldnt be out of place. The orange is lovely but I am not sure if its a bit too loud for us. We were trying to 'grown up' with the hallway. I think the pink looks lovely with it but my other half definately will veto a pink door!

In our other rooms we have lots of greens and the lighter of this colour series - shaded white, shadow white, green smoke, arsenic. So we are not scared of dark or bright colours but its something about this Hardwick which is undermining my confidence and I cant put my finger on it.

I have slaked lime in my hall for very similar reasons OP, and I'm not 100% convinced of it either. It's a bit of a meh colour, sensible and neutral but doesn't get my pulses racing like the green we have used in the dining room , or the orange in the lounge. I also got very confused with what colour to put over the dado rail, and which under, and where the different paints should stop. In the end I found a beautiful blue that I liked and painted it below the dado, and left the slaked lime above. Then I added some prints and a mirror and it looks much better, but I'm still not 100%. I've somehow managed to make it look overcrowded now.
I just think that hallways are really tricky! Normal room rules don't seem to apply at all, I guess because they mostly just gloomy corridors. I just looked at lots of Instagram posts, and 'madaboutthehouse' blog is useful too, and gave it my best shot. I'll probably end up going over the Slaked Lime with a warmer gold colour at some point.

Thanks for this thread. I have hardwick white wardrobes. They change colours. Which is beautiful. But not sure what prints or colours to get bed linen/ curtains I'm. So far looking at various navys and emerald greens.

RoSEbuds6 · 10/02/2021 17:47

ooh there's a nice hallway pic on this post too. It's made me realise I need to paint the [inside of the]] front door.

LemonSwan · 10/02/2021 23:47

I have just finished another coat! I am preferring it now but I am wondering whether we did it the wrong way round and whether the main door should have been Hardwick and the walls/panelling/skirting Shaded White. Doh!

Well we will continue and see where we get too.

It is crazy isnt it! Halls are literally the worst rooms but when you get them right they look fabulous.

I have been looking online at various ideas as per pps suggestion. I think my favourite so far is with white, with mustardy yellow or orange tones or with dark blue. In a room I think this would be much more achievable. I have no idea where to start with accessorising a hallway!

I've used Farrow & Ball for years and my humble option is 3 (sorry) coats to see the depth of colour. But you truly will not be disappointed. The colour will change through the seasons and with daylight. That's the joy of F&B paint. People tend to complain about the cost, but, paint is the cheapest interior tip to turn your home from ordinary to extraordinary.

LemonSwan · 13/02/2021 23:03

HopelesslyOptimistic You are right! It 3 coats now on most of the walls and it is stunning! I still need to do quite a bit of work and all the whites to really finish everything off but my god it is a beauty. I have decided I need to change the floor also.

I think this is just the F&B process lol! If you put on the first coat and think excellent then you will be disappointed when its finished. All the walls I have done where I was fretting turned out to be my favourites.

Ah great news you love it. A little tip, if you paint your ceilings and skirtings in the same colour as your walls, now watch that magic! 😉

Simple pleasures in life.
