What colours are NOT popular/on trend?

Lighthearted and not meant to offend! I don’t follow blogs or Instagram or interiors magazines so don’t really pick up on trends.... but it feels like almost every colour people mention on here someone might say it’s popular/on trend - not saying that’s good or bad to be on trend or not, but is every colour on trend?

What colours would you say are definitely anti-trend? Aside from magnolia Grin?

Lemonviolet - I’d love to watch some of the old ‘changing rooms’ again. I remember thinking some of the rooms were awful then, I bet they are ridiculously awful and hilarious now.

Navy and dark green were in the 1990s, with antique brass and country pine and a heavy cream colour.

Popular taste lags and whatever is off trend, some hipster will at the same time be going for it.

Excessive farmhouse/country style, stripped pine, shiny/gold plated tacky millionaire style stuff, matchy flower patterns, splashy patterns, I expect they'll be back soon.

LApprentiSorcier · 02/02/2021 07:50

Pukey greens.

LemonViolet · 02/02/2021 08:56

Ugh, were they ever @LApprentiSorcier!

@Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree don’t know if you’ll regret me telling you this but there are tonnes of Changing Rooms episodes on YouTube, if you can bear to watch slightly rubbish quality old videos. Kept me nicely entertained last year when I was injured and stuck on sofa/bed for a few days.

As an aside if anyone is interested I noticed that Interior Design Masters is back for a second series beginning tonight, I started a thread in Telly Addicts for discussing/judging/admiring/critiquing as needed!

Every wall in my house is either pure brilliant white or pale grey (except the accent wall in dd's bedroom, which is purple glitter Grin). Surely pale neutrals will never go out of fashion - they enable you to change the colour scheme by just changing the soft furnishings etc. I agree that the look where literally everything is grey is already dated though. Personally I like the more rustic/less modern and austere end of the Scandi look best. I don't care how fashionable or unfashionable it is!

@LemonViolet Our hall at home in the late 70s was painted puke green! Then in the 80s it was updated to mother-of-the-bride lilac.

VenusClapTrap · 06/02/2021 18:01

I disagree with those saying bright neon colours. Just flick through any recent edition of Elle Decoration or any other interiors rag, and it’s all fluorescent colours and maximalism, a la Emma J Shipley. Fuchsia pink, bright turquoise and acid yellow everywhere.

I think it’s the nineties browns, beiges and creams that are really out. Duck egg blue too - everyone had duck egg blue everything.

Although I’m interested to see that a pp suggested browns/beiges are on their way back. I hope so - I’ve always liked warm neutrals.

Duck egg blue too - everyone had duck egg blue everything.

My lounge is duck egg blue. I am delighted to hear it isn't "in"! I also have a yellow kitchen and yellow is apparently possibly not in.

But then I have 2 bedrooms and one reception room in different greens which are in and one bedroom grey with one navy wall.

So a total mish-mash of what is trendy or not. Happy with that.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/02/2021 18:31

I think grey has a few years to go yet. It’s what’s known as a ‘mega trend’ which last about 15 years. It was a reaction against beige and neutral browns which had been around for years.

I’m wondering if lilac is up and coming. Last around in the 2000’s. So liable to maybe make another return? The bright blue and yellows from the mid 90’s must surely be heading back too?

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 19:22

I’ve never been able to watch Changing Rooms since the “I’ve got a house filled with MDF” episode....

JaninaDuszejko · 06/02/2021 19:50

Quite a few almost duck egg blues here. I think it goes well enough with MCM furniture to still be popular, although inky blues are more fashionable. I don't think any blue ever goes completely out of fashion because it is the most popular colour. Whereas yellow is much more fashion led (popular as an accent at the moment but not as a whole room).

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 06/02/2021 23:03

Grey is popular but not on trend.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/02/2021 10:20

Yet Pantone’s interior colour of the year for 2021 is Ultimate Grey.

And they predict future colours so the dye recipes can be made up ready for demand. So they are ahead of the rest.

Being a total wimp when it comes to paint, my walls are and always will be variations on a theme of off-white!

I do like colour in fabrics though. My lounge curtains are what Laura Ashley marketed as Mango; more orange than ochre, slightly darker than saffron. I love them and will not be changing until they fall apart!
