Kitchen storage - on top of sideboard

We are planning to get a new kitchen at some point but the current lack of storage is doing my head in.

We don't have a lot of units but we also have an oak sideboard that I've managed to fit in some dead space. We are using the cupboards to keep things like tins and jars and back up boxes of teabags and jars of coffee etc. The top is a mess of everything that doesn't fit in plus our bottles of spirits, tin foil, spare plasticware etc. We don't have a lot of worktop space so it would also be good to get everything on the worktops (spices, open teabags and coffee, bread etc) over there too.

I'm looking for something that I can put on the top to just neaten it all up, so just maybe some open shelving but nothing I need to fix to the wall as it's full of electrics and pipes etc

Long term, I think I'm going to just get the whole bit filled with floor to ceiling storage units but it has all the central heating controls etc on the wall - I'm sure the builders will sort all that for us though :)

Any thoughts? maybe just a set of those ikea type cubes?

Can you put up a photo?

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/01/2021 21:52

No, it's too much of a mess Blush

Very similar to this: fits tightly into a space that used to be the tiny utility room but now part of the kitchen.

What about those stacking suitcases, or lidded seagrass baskets, the ones that have a big one at the bottom and smaller stood on top?

Thank you, I think those things would look nice but maybe not as practical as I need? It's stuff I'd be wanting access to all the time, like tins of tomatoes, beans etc as well as alcohol bottles, tea and coffee etc.

I don't mind if it's open and visible as its a temporary measure. Been planning to get kitchen replaced for a while but between trying to agree on taking a wall down and covid etc we aren't in a position to do it yet.

But the constant clutter and kneeling on the floor trying to see if there is a tin of kidney beans at the back of a sideboard cupboard is doing my head in especially as I'm stuck in at home working and nowhere to go when I'm not.

I don't mind the IKEA type box things but wondered if there was something nicer that I'm missing.

Can you find a cheap hutch to go on top of the sideboard?

Billy bookcase
Think it’s £15 for the smallest one and 28cm deep

Oh missed the end bit where you say something nicer than IKEA.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/01/2021 13:34

Thanks for the suggestions, we did have the option to get the hutch bit when we bought the sideboard but it would have been 2 cabinet width and not 3. Plus it was at the time of having just moved into a new house and it added a bit to the cost as we were buying dining table etc as well. We bought it all nearly 20 years ago and then moved house 18 months later and it's never really fitted properly into this house. I did at one point look to see if I could buy the top bit somewhere that matched with no joy.

I'd be happy to pay 2nd hand prices for something that didn't match but would rather not pay full price for something that didn't - if that makes sense?

I'll maybe have a look on ebay/local selling sites to see if there is anything suitable.

Why not some wooden wine boxes/veg crates stacked on their sides.
They could then be used for tins etc and easily accessible.

oh that's a good idea, do you think they'd be stable enough stacked if not attached to the wall?

Away to look as to how easy they are to get as well.

No suggestions, just solidarity. There's no point us getting our kitchen done as we're planning to move this year or next to a house (in a flat now) but the lack of kitchen space is killing me. Being at home with 2 kids in lockdown is making it worse as I feel like I'm constantly in the kitchen ana the room stresses me out and makes me depressed

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/01/2021 15:04

Sorry to hear that @YukoandHiro, it's been a tough time and I think we are all being niggled by all sorts of stuff that might have washed over us in the past.
