A greens grey paint, but for a North facing room

We have a large north facing downstairs room, used as a playroom. Flooring will be amtico in a dark oak, we have this rug tm-interiors.co.uk/rugs-brands/harlequin-floreale-rug-maize-44906, sofas are mid grey, curtains are a pale gold damask.

I was hopeful for f&b mizzle www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/mizzle but despite what they say, I think it looks a bit too blue and I think that may be because the room is north facing.

Any other suggestions please? I’ve also tried dulux Jurassic stone (too pale) and f&b french grey (too dark).

Thanks - I will give it a go!

My parents have one wall painted in none in their living room and it's a really lovely colour. If definitely describe it ad a grey green. Their living room runs north to south with woodies at each end but they tend to have slatted blinds turned for privacy so there's not that much natural light coming in. I think it works be fine in a North facing room.

Bone

CrystalMaisie · 03/02/2021 19:23

@PastramiNoRye of course, it will have to be just a corner as the whole thing would be outing. This is tonight in halogen light, I’ll do another one in the morning.
I remember looking at some pics of it on Pinterest and Instagram too.

@CrystalMaisie thank you! It's really lovely Smile

We've got Dulux Crushed Aloe in a north facing living room but it's maybe a bit green for what you want.

WellTidy · 03/02/2021 20:05

ican- I’ve ordered a tester for delivery, thanks.

book bone has no green in it at all in my room, it’s just a darkish grey, unfortunately.

crystal yes, too dark for me, unfortunately.

Cromarty is lovely it's a light green grey I guess, but more green. We've also got light blue which weirdly looks a little green and is beautiful.

WellTidy · 03/02/2021 20:11

I have my fingers crossed for Cromarty (having already bought ten tester pots). I will be seeking it out at the weekend.

I've got Dulux silken clay which I love. Works well with ochre/pinks/greys/blues.

@Dragon11

How about Dulux Tranquail Dawn.
I second Tranquil Dawn. I have it in my bedroom and it's a mint which turns to grey/green in different light. My bedroom is West facing but if it was North it would be greyish green. I really like it.
WellTidy · 03/02/2021 20:16

Tranquil Dawn is very very blue in my room, unfortunately.

And Dulux Silken Clay is very brown, unfortunately.

That's a shame. I hope you find what you're looking for.
IsItTimeForGinYet · 03/02/2021 21:16

May be too green but what about little Greene tracery?

Wellysock · 03/02/2021 21:24

I had Cromarty and it was a perfect grey green in my dark living room

WellTidy · 03/02/2021 21:40

Tracery and Tracery II are both very grey, and too dark, unfortunately.

I am soooooo hopeful for Cromarty!

Dulux antique map might be worth a try. Looks beige on the tin but is actually a green/grey. I had it in a north facing room and it was lovely.

IsItTimeForGinYet · 03/02/2021 21:54

I'm always amazed how light affects paint and colour. We have tracery in our downstairs bathroom and it has no natural light and it's defo green. Good luck!

toughluck · 03/02/2021 22:25

@WellTidy I tested it in the back of a fitted wardrobe that's soon to be removed so a pretty dark space and it still looked a lovely green!

@WellTidy
Hi - I think it might help if you think of the colour a bit differently.

Rather than a grey with green in it, think of it as looking for a green without much colour in it. For that’s what all grey paints are -
knocked-back, greyed-out child colours, of fully saturated Hue Parents.

All greys belong to a Hue Family.

Mizzle belongs to the Green-Yellow Hue Family. Some will see it as definitely green, others more grey and for some, it has the potential to read positively blue! (The last one in light which spikes more in blue/violet wavelengths)

You can find greyed-greens from the Yellow Hue Family, like Jurassic Stone. Also like Mizzle from the Green-Yellow Hue Family and more from the Green Hue Family obviously.

You say Mizzle is too dark but Jurassic stone is too pale?
Do you mean Jurassic Stone is too light or just not colourful enough?

WellTidy · 04/02/2021 15:56

Oh god colette! I just don’t know whether Jurassic stone is too light or just not colourful enough. I just know it isn’t ‘enough’! I think I mean too light. Wishy washy. Am I making any sense?

I accept that Mizzle is objectively from the green yellow family. I see this when I look at the sample. But when I look at it on the walls in the room, I don’t see any yellow whatsoever in it. I see the green, and if I had to say which other colour I saw in it then I would say blue.

Would it help if I described the room more? It faces north, there are french doors and windows in a bay at one end (the end that faces north). Very high ceilings, coving, no picture rail, deep skirtings. A large-ish room, maybe 20 feet long, 12 feet wide, maybe. Two internal doors. All doors and woodwork painted white. Chimney breast, big fireplace.

Not at all green, but I have elephant's breath in my north facing room and its lovely

colette100 · 04/02/2021 17:03

😆 Wishy-washy is good! That can be a mix of both Lightness + Chroma
Too little Chroma can mean not colourful enough for you in that light.

Here are a couple of alternatives to Jurassic Stone.
One a smidge darker (lower Lightness) + colourful (higher Chroma)
One a little lighter (higher Lightness) + colourful (higher Chroma)

If Mizzle is too dark - then you need a Lightness higher than 78.

If you can wrap you head around the fact that colour has measurable dimensions, Hue - Lightness - Chroma - LRV . Then it becomes possible to adjust each of those dimensions separately to find a closer match to that you seek.

Like an old-fashioned radio - you are tuning in to get the best signal!

P.s.
Cromarty is lighter than Mizzle by approx 4.5 points.
(Higher Lightness value)

Cromarty is more neutral than any of the colours mentioned.
(Lower Chroma)
