Where do you get your sofas from??

We have leather recliner sofas from DFS which are a few years old but have fallen apart (cost £1800), looking to replace them with a fabric sofa, not recliners necessarily but deep comfy seats, corner sofa with 7 seats.

DH not keen on dfs or similar as think it's all style no substance, where do we go for good quality, nice looking sofas?! Seen a Loaf one in John Lewis but it's pricey - will pay more for one that will last though!

Is Sofology any good?

Help!

IKEA. Absolutely love our sofa. It’s a sofa bed with a chaise addition on the end. It’s a modular sofa so you build it how you want it. Sitting on the sofa bed bit, you wouldn’t know it was. Normally you can tell with a sofa bed because it’s not as comfy. Two people can sit on the chaise bit comfortably.

Oh and the chaise end is also an ottoman so we keep our DVDs underneath it.

This is my sofa:

Got two IKEA sofas and really can’t fault them, wait until no children and animals before I buy super expensive sofas. We’ve stripped and washed the covers so many times which is so helpful.
I really can’t abide buying from dfs etc as the wait time is huge then you have to wait until just before to find out when their delivery is (my experience last time I bought one years ago) so IKEA much more convenient, quick delivery.

Another vote for Sofasofa. com - one three seater and one two seater sofa - still going strong over ten years later. Bought an optional set of loose covers which are very handy as we're a bit careless. Excellent service too. We'll definitely get our next ones from them - well worth the trip to Wales to try them out.

Yes yes yes to SofaSofa. They are British-made and such good value. They did used to have a Birmingham showroom but it closed a few years ago. They do a 21-day money back guarantee and will come and pick it up if it isn’t right.

Duresta, still going after 20 years. My mum's Parker knoll is the same age and still looks in good shape.

Sociology were horrendous for us. 12 week delay (on top of the six week wait we were expecting) then after that declared that it'd be another six weeks (this was the third occasion on which someone had taken the day off to be in for a sofa delivery that didn't happen, for one reason or another- they never said it wouldn't go ahead until I called on the day to query where it was)... We cancelled the order (with great difficulty- getting through to customer service took some doing!) in the end.

From what I gather, it either goes well with them or is a total disaster. They were very unapologetic, too.

*Autocorrect at work there, but I bet you can guess what I meant to type!

As with so many things you - mostly - get what you pay for. The bigger stores sell a range of sofas to meet their customers requirements. At the top end these will be well made and should last well.

A lower priced sofa is more hit and miss regardless of where you buy it, so check carefully and make sure it’s right for you.

Top tip. Check fillings carefully. It might look amazing in the showroom but if the cushions loose 50% of their density within 6 months - within manufacturing tolerance btw - it will look shit.

FIRA are an independent organisation and have buying guides on their website.

My leather corner couch was from sofology (but I think it was called csl at the time, I’m sure it rebranded). It’s 10 years old and genuinely still looks in very good condition. Far better than my friends John Lewis leather sofa bought at the same time. Theirs is all scuffed and wrinkled. There’s not a mark on mine and it’s been well abused by two children.

Metallicalover · 09/02/2021 08:05

Marks and Spencer, my sofas are 8 year old and still look new!

boymum9 · 09/02/2021 08:31

I have a loaf sofa that looks good for about 3 minutes when you've fluffed up the seat cushions but otherwise is not particularly comfy, it's discoloured, doesn't clean up well even though was the special fabric that is meant to clean. Wouldn't recommend.

My parents and sister both have M&S sofas and they're so comfy and look lovely.

pinkhousesarebest · 09/02/2021 08:35

IKEA all the way. We had a ekescog that was still going strong after 20 years. We have Stocksunds that I bought new covers for and just bought a farlov . Really robust.

Monty27 · 09/02/2021 08:36

When I had money many moons ago it was mark's and Spencer
Now it's eBay
I've had one from Harrods via eBay and gave it to charity then got another eBay one from mark's and Spencer
The world's your lobster 🙂

purplediva · 09/02/2021 08:37

barker and stonehouse - we’ve had ours 3 years and still looking good
They have a few shops dotted around the country so you can go and actually see items
It tells you which stores have what if you look on the website

Lemonsyellow · 09/02/2021 08:41

I’m surprised that people are impressed at a sofa lasting three, eight years etc. I would be appalled if a sofa didn’t last that long. My sofa is nearly 30 years old and still going strong.

Ginevere · 09/02/2021 08:52

Mine is DFS, 5 years old and looks new! Fabric, not leather, wonder if that makes a difference?

SnowfallSnowball · 09/02/2021 08:57

I recently got a Habitat one from Argos, I wanted a DFS one but was too impatient to wait 3 months for it! Got this within a week or so of ordering it.

Lulu1919 · 09/02/2021 09:30

Bouledeneige · 09/02/2021 23:34

Ours is the Oscar large chaise sofa from Loaf.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 10/02/2021 08:01

If you're not after a matching set Trade secret sell excess stock & returns from big companies. Loaf, Laura Ashley, JL & M&S etc.

Might be worth a browse

We have m and s abbey sofas in our sitting room and they’ve been fantastic. About ten years old now, and they’ve taken a pummelling, but they still look good and are super comfy. I give the cushions a good shake each week and vacuum them when I remember, and that’s it. I am thinking about buying them again for the playroom but DH would like a change. I think we may regret that though as the abbey are tried and tested in our house
