Has anyone painted a piano?

We are just about to be given an old but decent upright piano. It needs a bit of tlc, and needs refinishing and I am planning on cleaning, sanding and painting it up. Has anyone done this and could give me some tips, show me a photo of how its styled or recommend a colour? I am thinking maybe F and B with a foam roller, in a light colour so its not too oppressive. Any ideas welcome! Smile

There’s parts of that you will be able to remove and paint separately so that will make it a bit easier, pianos don’t like changes in humidity but it will already be sulking as they don’t like being moved either. I think it will look lovely, try and keep the room well ventilated while you do it but also quite warm so it will dry quickly, then let it settle for about 6 weeks and get it tuned.

Please post a pic when you’ve finished.

Oh she does need rescuing! You can only make her better!
The natural wood tone left under the lid is really lovely though. Maybe that could be the contrast with the painted outside - you could do the edge of the lid in a complementary metallic for that extra hint of surprise when you lift the lid?

In terms of colour ideas, what is going on in the rest of the room, and are you wanting the piano to blend in or be an eye catching feature?

😂I did try to tell you all she really does need a makeover.. I like the idea of leaving a little bit of the original wood under the lid, it actually looks like it would have been a nice, mellow tone, hopefully I can get it back to that. I think the pedals and name would have been brass or gold so I want to try to bring it up a bit, and yes, a hint of that elsewhere would be nice and quite subtle. I love the bold colours but I don’t think it would be right in my house, so I was thinking a softer look, quite warm, an off white to taupe ish? We have oak floors, and then some warm greys, creams, plum, pink, sage green and as I don’t know exactly where to put it yet I would probably be best staying neutral. We haven’t done the front living room yet so maybe in there, and I was thinking a dark green or blue with green undertones and there is a limestone fireplace in there.
Any colour suggestions anyone? I promise to post some more photos 😁.
Is it quite simple to take those bits off to re finish my ugly duckling? I have watched son videos but they can always make it look scarier than the reality is.
