Suggestions for window that looks out onto a roof

The loft conversion of our semi-detached house looks directly out onto the neighbours' roof tiles. It is not a very inspiring sight! See attached photo.

Do you have any suggestions for how I can make the view more interesting?

Unfortunately the window sill is very shallow (

Could you have stained glass? Something like this?

Wow, I did not even know that this was an option! That could work very nicely. I will have a browse of the website.

I’d change to day and night blinds. I’ve some in the bathroom and they stay open all the time but defintely obscure the view, whilst letting light in.

I’d not do the stickers, they look like stickers in real life.

Shelf just below the sill for plants?

FriedMacaroni · 24/01/2021 12:00

My husband has vetoed the stickers so that option is off the table....

I had not heard of day and night blinds either. I've watched the video but still slightly confused as to how they works? This is when I really miss being able to go and walk around shops. We're keen that the window lets in as much light as possible to light up the stairwell. This does look like an option worth exploring.

A shelf below the sill would obstruct the curtains, but you have got me wondering if could we buy and install a new sill into the existing space, that extend outwards? Another option would be a small set of shelves beneath the window, but again, I think this would obstruct the curtains.

The other option I've been musing on is a grid of fairy lights over the window - any thoughts on this?

Thanks all, you've been most useful.

Day and night nlinds are basically two pieces of material, back to back. Both have solid stripes and clear stripes, you roll them using the chain, like opening and closing any other blind.

When the dark panels and clear panels on both sets of material are lined up, then it is alternating sold bars and clear transparent bars, when they are not lined up, the clear panels are hidden, so it’s a solid colour, and the blinds are closed

So as said, we have them in the bathrooms, they are never closed, but obscures the view, so no one can see in.

Thanks Bluntness100, that's helpful

The last thing I’d do is highlight it with fairy lights. You need to hide the view rather than draw attention to it, so as bluntness suggests, Day & Night blind. They’re good. Have focal points in the rest of the room.

I like the plants idea or maybe shutter blinds which are half the window.. I think they also do ones which are full shutters but the top half still opens up separately to the bottom half to let light in..

Peachee · 26/01/2021 22:45

Tier on tier they’re called..

Oh dear, not much support for my fairy light idea!

I am going to see if we can install a fuller windowsill as a first step. Then I can put plants on the windowsill.

The tier on tier and day and night blind suggestions do look good in the photos. I have a slight aversion to horizontal blinds which I feel I should explain. When we moved in the house was very dark and there were cheap venetian blinds at every window. We have worked hard to bring the light in and make the house feel less like an office block. If plants and a sill are not enough to improve the feel I will explore the blinds too.

Thanks again, really appreciate your thoughts.

I would hang something pretty on the window I think. A stained glass hanging, or a decorative wreath. Something that lets light through but your eye focuses on the pretty item rather than the roof.

I don’t hate your fairy light idea, I think if the lights are across the window rather than around it then it will obscure the view rather than highlight. But you’d have to have the lights on all the time so would chew through batteries.

Suncatcher - better term for stained glass window thingy!
