White paint for a north facing room

Hi I am revamping my kitchen, the worktops are wood effect and the tiling is a pale grey and white colour with small splashes of peach in the trim. The kitchen is probably quite old (we didn't choose it) but we can't afford to replace it at the moment.

We are planning on painting the kitchen cupboards a sage green or pale blue type colour and would like to paint the walls white.

I bought some Homebase kitchen paint (coconut milk) and it looks almost grey so want to get a warmer creamy type of white, as it is a north facing room.

Do you know of a shade of white that would work in a north facing room please?

Something like Dulux Timeless should work. I’ve only ever tried it in a south facing room where it looked quite creamy, but apparently it looks a lot less yellow in north facing rooms. It definitely won’t look grey

Thank you. Would you say it's better to get Dulux than Homebase own paint?

We've used Dulux White Cotton in our north facing kitchen, its a lovely chalky white, just a hint of warmth.

Sometimes people mistakenly think that the most neutral of whites is the one to choose to brighten a moderate or dimly lit space.

But these kind of whites really require more sunlight to be at their glowing best.

And as the majority of colours can darken and grey-out to a degree when viewed on the ceiling plane, these types of whites can often end up bluey and shadowy around the edges of the ceiling.

So choosing whites which have just a bit more Chroma, (colourfulness) helps them to punch through the gloom just that bit more.

We have F&B Wimborne White in 3 north facing rooms. It’s a lovely soft, warm colour - I’m not sure if you’d really describe it as “white” though. Not quite cream either, but heading that way (we also have it in a south facing room and it’s much warmer there - I prefer it in the north facing rooms).

I’m not sure how Homebase compares to Dulux, so I really can’t say I’m afraid. I’ve used Dulux in the past and never had any problems with that, but Homebase might be equally good 🤔

If you’re open to more expensive suggestions, I second the Farrow & Ball Wimborne White suggested above. I also have that in my north facing living room and it’s absolutely lovely, but F&B do come with a price tag!

We had Timeless in our north facing kitchen. To me it looked grubby.
We've redecorated with Skimming Stone which looks fresh and clean, but also has some warmth.

Ooh my favourite subject. I spent many weeks and £££ to pick a warmish white for our northfacing living room. I wanted warm and clean but not yellow. There was a lovely farrow & ball one but seriously 3 coats in it was still a patchy mess so I gave up and continued the search. Dulux subtle fossil in diamond matt finish was what I settled on. I have since done most of my house in it. You need to get it mixed for you, it won't be on the shelf.

We use Mylands brilliant white in our north facing rooms, it is a matt true white and works very well.

I tried timeless in my north facing dining room. I always thought my walls looked grubby.
We changed to Jasmine white. I love It. It is white 99% of the time but every now and again their is the tiniest slight green hue. It's hard to explain because it's not really green at all. It's softer than brilliant white without looking grubby.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 25/01/2021 23:59

Wimborne white or jasmine white (which can look yellow, but I like it). Timeless quite cold, I find.

KirstenBlest · 26/01/2021 21:11

The blue will look cold. A warm white against a cool colour will look grubby.

A lot of Dulux pure brilliant whites aren’t really pure brilliant white. They are much softer, slightly creamy. So it might be worthwhile trying one of those.

Wimborne White is excellent. Years ago I did my whole flat in it. It works in every light and is lovely and soft.

We've got Duluth Timeless as well, in our dining too which is North facing. We like it!

Pointing - similar to Wimborne White but a bit less creamy and slightly more sophisticated IMO.

Or if that is still too creamy, try Loft white by Little Greene or Fuji by Paint & Paper Library

All these can be colour matched by eg Johnstones to save money - although not always that accurate so get a tester made up first.

Jasmine White is not bad but a little bit lemony.
