Dinner set

Not sure if this is exactly the right place to put this but wasn’t sure where else it should go.

Looking a for a nice dinner set for everyday use, something fairly neutral. Decent quality that it’ll withstand every day use but don’t want to stretch to Denby prices. Have looked in Next, Sainsbury’s, John Lewis, M&S but nothing grabs me. Came across a nice set in Zara home but no experience of their home stuff.

Anywhere else I’ve not thought of?

Had a quick look on Wayfair but far too much to look at on there!

Have a look at Dunelm . In the days of being able to shop they had some nice ones.

ParkheadParadise · 20/01/2021 11:59

Might not be your cup of tea😂

But Asda and Matalan and Tesco all do nice homeware. Cheap enough to replace when it breaks for everyday use.

I have the Corelle Winter Frost White set - we've used Corelle for about 3 generations Grin it's simple, lightweight, they stack up super thin taking up less space in the cupboard and very hardwearing.

FanSpamTastic · 20/01/2021 12:23

We have IKEA - just square white plates but they do the job!

BeastOfBODMAS · 20/01/2021 12:44

I bought a beautiful pristine vintage BHS set from a charity shop for £15. 4 years of smashing, chipping and knackering the glaze in the microwave later, I learned that it’s collectible and individual plates go for £10 each online Blush
What’s left of it is still lovely and in daily use!l

Creatable is a good mid-price German company that makes dinner services across a very wide range of designs. Both Amazon and Wayfair stock them.

Swingometer · 20/01/2021 12:47

If you are anywhere near a Boundary Mill outlet they have things like Denby, Portmerion etc but at heavily discounted prices

Probably not open during lockdown but I think they have a website too

WeeM · 20/01/2021 13:08

some great suggestions thanks. I never thought of IKEA because I can’t actually get there but they do have better delivery service now for smaller items so will have a look.
Never heard of Boundary Mill so I’ll def see if they have a website Grin

I bought a whole set from The White Company, at HUGE expense, years ago. Plain white and very nice. One by one my kids broke things and i was 😭

I then spotted the plain white plates they did in Morrisons and bought one to see how different they were. To my horror / delight they were EXACTLY the same, to the point where they must have been made in the same factory. 😮 Also the Sainsburys plain white set too are interchangeable with them.

So for plain white, Morrisons and Sainsburys cannot be beaten. I have about 20 each of dinner plates and side plates, mixed in with my White Co. ones). My cereal bowls are a mix of random blue and white china but all in the same kind of shape, so that matches my kitchen.

If you are looking at the cheaper end of the market Wilko do a set of 12 for under £20 which is a knock off of Denby style
www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-cream-speckled-dinner-set-12-piece/p/0479317
Also comes in grey and slightly more expensive for the black

livingthegoodlife · 20/01/2021 20:13

I have a John Lewis white set. £20 for setting for 4. I have 3 sets, looks lovely.

Buy it is quite dull/classical. Maybe you're looking for something more modern?

WeeM · 20/01/2021 22:22

I think I was thinking something more stoneware type. Problem is I’m not sure what I want but will know it when I see it Confused!

I like that wilko one but I’m put off by plates that have that sort of edge on them as I don’t think they stack as easily.

There’s one on IKEA site I like but not available for home delivery Sad

@BigusBumus that’s really interesting because I saw a lovely one on white Company site but because I want 6 settings I’d need to buy 2 sets so would be really expensive, it looks lovely though! Off to look at Morrison’s!

Habitat?
Agree Ikea if you are thinking modern eg. 365+ range.
The M&S Marlowe range is designed by British designer Sue Pryke from the Great Pottery Showdown and has a cool minimal look. You can mix and match the colours. Do NOT look at www.suepryke.com or everything else will look crap by comparison.

Phantom1 · 20/01/2021 23:02

If you consider buying plates that have a lip around the edge, they may not stack or wash well in a dishwasher.

WeeM · 20/01/2021 23:32

Ooh habitat, not looked there.

Yeah @Phantom1, that’s what I’m thinking. Don’t want to end up with ones that won’t go in dishwasher properly.

Ebay is often worth a look. Also Denby have a clearance shop where they sell seconds and discontinued lines - online at the moment.

NotMeNoNo · 21/01/2021 09:51

Product reviews often mention about stacking/dishwasher issues if you are concerned.

Have a look on Rinkit website
