advice for when lockdown is over...
We work full time but need our stairs, landing and all 4 bedroom a re carpeted.
How the hell do you arrange this if you are still living in the house? All bedrooms have large solid free standing wardrobes, draws and double beds, bookcases full of books, desks....

I would really appreciate some practical advice!

There's a great thread about carpet fitters storming out here somewhere.

If you clear it in advance carpet fitters are magicians who can work around all-sorts.

When we had our flat recarpeted it was done over several days and involved moving stuff around rooms! They worked around furniture to an extent. So we had to empty wardrobes but they shifted the wardrobe and bed in the room to let them lay the carpet rather than remove them completely.

We worked out what order to do it all in so it worked best.

I too would love to know this OP ... our home has literally NO ROOM to put furniture out the way whilst it's done. Sad

1 room at a time
If you carpet fitters aren’t arseholes they will fully understand

We've just done two bedrooms but also need to do landing and stairs. Decided to do in 2 goes which was hideous enough! Dismantling the furniture from 2 bedrooms and completely emptying those rooms into other parts of the house was not fun Grin carpet fitters aren't very expensive so for us it was worth paying that bit extra to have less absolute torture!

One room at a time.

Hall, stairs and landing should be done last, as otherwise they are running up and down stairs with the bedroom fittings.

It's a chance to declutter!

I'm the same OP, really want new carpets. Stairs not so bad, then individual bedrooms ok but all 3 at the same time I can't imagine.

I think I am going to order and pay for carpet, to ensure I have matching then do stairs and ds bedroom (smallest) then mine and dhs bedroom and then dds. Or possibly ds and stairs last, bigger bedrooms first on the basis I can use landing if I need to if it's not new carpets.

The carpet fitters did ours in 2 goes, with a day in between. So one day they did the largest two bedrooms and then, 2 days later, they did the smaller bedrooms and the landing & stairs. It was a bit chaotic but it all turned out ok in the end.

We moved furniture that was light enough, beds and emptied the wardrobes into other bedrooms and brought things down to the living room whilst it was done. If I was you maybe do two rooms landing and stairs and use the two other rooms for storage in one day, move the stuff back out and empty the other two rooms and have them come back another day

Cheesypea · 16/01/2021 18:52

Yes one room at a time. Start with the worst and repaint as well if you need too. Are all the rooms occupied?

Airfixkitwidow · 16/01/2021 18:55

I've spoken to our local removal company. They're offer a service where they remove all the furniture, keep it in the van and then put it back when it's done. Not cheap but saves us moving the furniture. Planning on doing upstairs on one day and downstairs on the next.

Our carpet fitter did 3 bedrooms and stairs in one day. Emptied contents of drawers into suitcases and moved them and small items of furniture into the bathroom/downstairs. Left beds/mattresses/empty bookcases in bedrooms and he worked round them. We have built in wardrobes though which helped. Took a couple of days of prep beforehand (and the house looked a tip!) but worth it for the lovely new carpets. Then I made a bright decision to get a rescue cat who has since savaged my stair carpet beyond recognition... Hmm

I have a relatively small flat and will be doing the removal company plus a couple of nights in a premier inn as soon as restrictions allow.
