We’ve just moved house and I’m looking for some contemporary style home decor ideas/items (prints as an example) and google seems to throw up Etsy a lot
There are so many different products on there when I don’t know what I am specifically looking for or the best search terms to use!
Does anyone use it a lot or have any links to nice contemporary home decor items? or links to anything that they’ve bought from Etsy and really loved?
How easy is it to buy from there?
I know it’s totally subjective and people like different styles/items but I’d really appreciate any links or ideas help to find some decor for our home via Etsy!
Thanks

It's impossible to make suggestions without knowing your taste but as a starting point and to take your example of prints I would suggest looking on Instagram at hashtags like #gallerywall. They are much derided on MN but it will be an efficient way of identifying the style that you like, and if you tap on the image you will find that the makers are often tagged.

Etsy is just a selling platform so the best way to streamline your search results is using the filters. I usually filter to sellers who ship to the UK or who are based in the UK (remember that customs charges may be payable on items from international sellers). A huge proportion of the sellers are in the US so this reduces the numbers significantly and makes it much more manageable.

As mentioned above, Etsy is a selling platform so there are literally thousands of individual sellers in there selling everything for your hone (except I imagine kitchens, white goods and the like).

If you browse and note the tags in the bottom of the image for the product you’re looking at, this will help you a bit. Also, if you like something (using the little heart) you’ll get similar items showing up as suggestions.

Contemporary can mean many things. Industrial, mid century modern (which also is very popular style now in regular shops), BoHo is electric contemporary

So have a browse, liking things you see and noting the tags.

You’ll be automatically limited to sellers who ship to UK. There are thousands in the UK even though Etsy was originally a US only selling platform. There are sellers from many countries of origin so do be sure you look where the item ships from.

Another website to look at is Vinterior for furniture and decor (not usually soft furnishings(.

Thanks, I’ll have a look although it sounds like I might be better looking elsewhere then? Didn’t realise so many were US based so good point about customs charges
@ThanksItHasPockets what is derided on MN? Instagram you mean? Not got the hang of that either so gave up as all the houses looked similar

Will have a look at vinterior @SaltyTootsieToes never heard of it, thank you
When I say contemporary, I just mean more modern as opposed to vintage style items, modern but not the latest ‘trend’ IYSWIM?

You can filter the “seller’s location” to U.K. which helps.

whattimeisteaready · 10/01/2021 16:55

@SaltyTootsieToes, vinterior is the exact opposite of what I’m looking for, but thanks anyway
I’m just fed up of the Next type of stuff that everyone else has but maybe I need to wait until things are open again as I’m struggling to find things online

No, gallery walls! I rather like them, personally Smile

Be aware that things on Etsy are usually non-returnable if it arrives and you don’t like it, as they’re usually made to order. I’ve ordered a tablecloth but didn’t like the fabric and a phone case in the wrong size - entirely my fault but if I’d ordered from a store I could return no problem.

ThanksItHasPockets · 10/01/2021 18:15

Yes, good point. Unless faulty, custom-made and personalised goods are exempt from the usual protections of consumer contracts regulations (previously the distance selling regs).

I love Etsy, I've bought a lovely dining room table, like the John Lewis calia one but cheaper and better made, some shelves and lots of decorative items particularly for my childrens' rooms. I get ideas from Instagram - I know a lot is very samey but you can find some accounts which are your style and get lots of ideas from them.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 10/01/2021 18:33

I love Etsy and have bought lots of things there over the last few years. I've never had a bad experience and have found some really lovely things. It's very easy to buy from (too easy actually!) and secure.

As others have said, use the filters. I always filter to ship from the UK and handmade. Use clear key words to search on. I also click the heart to 'favourite' items to come back to or you can 'favourite' individual stores. This helps if you see several things that you like and want to come back to them. If you see something that you like the style of but it's not quite right, click on the shop name and see what else they have. Pay attention to dimensions.

I bought a Butler's table coffee table from Etsy just before Christmas! Oak, made to order and very reasonably priced!

OP could you have a look at Pinterest, get an idea of what you like & then search that way?

whattimeisteaready · 11/01/2021 23:18

Thanks all, managed to find a couple of things using the filtered search, hope they’re as nice as they look!
@Isolatedizzy embarrassing but I just can’t get the hang of Pinterest at all but would love to use it more but end up clicking the wrong things and on totally unrelated stuff 🤦‍♀️
May have another go when I’m feeling patient!
