Curtains yes or no... opinions wanted

I can't decide on curtains or not....I'm thinking plain dark grey, possibly velvet. I think it would look more cosy/finished.

Only think is I can't find any ready made long enough (280cm) and I'm not sure how I would fit a pole
because the wall above the window is hollow....

Also I quite like the proportions with the picture in the middle wall and feel it may be off if the space is smaller with curtains.

What do you all think, help me decide

No to curtains. I think it looks good as it is

TerribleCustomerCervix · 15/12/2020 19:55

No leave it as it is, it’s lovely.

If you put curtains on windows that close together it’ll just look like a big wall of fabric.

inquietant · 15/12/2020 19:57

Looks really nice, so long as it draughty I would leave it.

inquietant · 15/12/2020 19:58

Hmm I can't form a sentence - as long as not draughty...

CottonSock · 15/12/2020 19:59

No, you already have blinds and shutters, don't need curtains

Smidge001 · 15/12/2020 20:02

Room looks nice but I do like curtains, and they definitely would help it feel cosier.
If you don't want to impact the symmetry of the middle picture, have you thought about having a single curtain for each window that you draw open in opposite directions - ie each curtain is pulled open towards the wall, away from the middle? It looks as though there would be enough space.

Hollow walls are a pain but there are specialist rawl plugs etc to handle these things. Just suggest you get a professional to do it, as they will know what is suitable and be able to adapt once they start drilling and find different structures behind each bracket spot!

Babamamananarama · 15/12/2020 20:05

No, leave it as it is. It's neat and nicely balanced. Curtains will swamp that wall. No need.

jeez2020 · 15/12/2020 20:41

Thanks everyone.
I can definitely see what you mean about the wall being swamped with fabric, it was more about the look as I doubt I would ever close them! It is quite a dark room aswell so I think I'll leave as it is.
It's so hard to make a room look cosy when you don't like a lot of stuff everywhere!

Your windows are lovely. You don’t need curtains but I can see what you mean about the overall look and feel. I think the ideal solution would be handmade Roman blinds in a beautiful fabric, picking up on the colour theme of the room. It would “dress” the windows and yet not take up too much space or be too heavy. You can get them made for not too much if you don’t choose and expensive fabric.

RunnerDown · 26/12/2020 00:53

I would also go for Roman blinds in a nice fabric. Your room looks lovely but Roman blinds with a stronger colour or a pattern would soften the overall effect

Coolerthanapolarbearstoenails · 26/12/2020 01:24

If you do go for them ikeas curtains come in a standard 300cm.

I would..

Pipandmum · 26/12/2020 01:31

I would not put curtains there. But I think it looks a bit bland. I'd put roman blinds up in a bright colour and/or pattern.

binnhill · 26/12/2020 01:41

Yes it's a very bland room, grey walls, grey chairs. Roman blinds are lovely, and you can get away with a bold pattern on them since room is so neutral.

Justa47 · 26/12/2020 04:00

Yes I would do Roman blinds. Bold pattern and lovely folds

roastedpudding · 26/12/2020 04:20

No, it's lovely as it is.

PJsEveryday · 26/12/2020 17:32

Before seeing your picture I was going to say curtains, but your room is so lovely that ik not sure curtains would enhance it in any way. But I agree with the pp that perhaps roman blinds in a colourful pattern would lift the room a bit. Or maybe even a dramatic color on the walls? But no curtains i would say.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 26/12/2020 17:39

It doesn't have to be blinds, but by God that room needs some colour! It is pretty but incredibly bland.

Lifeispassingby · 28/12/2020 08:50

I would put some curtains there for texture, but it would need to be a massive pair to cover the whole wall when closed. The additional fabric would add texture to the room

Bluntness100 · 28/12/2020 09:30

I think the fact you have both blinds and shutters would make a third treatment of curtains too busy. The reason it looks a bit cold is because the blinds are plain.

Something like a warmer colour. In a more luxurious fabric would warm it up. I have velvet blinds as an example. They are from Blinds2Go. I also have silk ones in another room.

jeez2020 · 03/01/2021 18:38

Oops, I didn't realise people were still responding!! Thanks everyone!
Yes the room from that view does look plain and boring, that's why I was thinking about curtains in the first place. Velvet blinds could be an option, I'll check that out!
The rest of the room has lots of colour, oversized artworks, plants, wood furniture etc so I don't think it looks bland as a whole!

Yes to curtains, IKEA does long ones. It will make the room feel more cosy and finished. You could also hang the rail from the ceiling if you can’t do the wall. I’d go for cream, white or another neutral colour but not grey.
