What size does a room need to be to fit a king bed?

Moving into a new place soon. The room is 11'8 x 10'10 (3.6 x 3.3) but has a chimney. Am thinking of putting two wardrobes/draws in the alcoves and would like a bedside table each side of bed.
Would this size room take a king bed or am I best sticking to the double?

You need to draw a scale floor plan, then add the furniture where you want it. And then you see what do you have. Don't forget doors, radiators, windows, Drawer opening spaces etc. And the plug sockets.

A king size bed is 6ft wide, so it depends on how much floor space you want really. I suppose you could fit one in a 6x6ft room, if you'd be happy to dive into it from the door way Wink The size of your room sounds fine. Sliding doors on your wardrobe would make it easier to open the doors. How wide are your bedside tables? Does the bed come apart ?

Going to buy all furniture from new so can adapt!

Lovely! Just make sure you've got enough space to assemble/fit everything through the door. Should be fine. King size beds normally come in two parts.

Hi OP and @MeringueCloud - the six foot beds are Superking sized. King sized mattresses (in the UK) are 5 feet wide (150cm) and 6 feet 6 inches long (200cm). The bed frame would add a few more cm to the dimensions.

We have a smallish master bedroom and fit a king bed plus bedside chests on both sides.
The extra 6 inches needed for the larger size bed makes a huge difference to sleeping space and therefor comfort

I like a minimum of 90cm space on each side of the bed (except the head of course) to feel comfortable walking round it, opening drawers etc. 120-150 cm feels better.

As well as the fact that king size is 6 inches wider than a double, the other thing to think about is that bed frames are around 3 inches longer than divan beds. I had to have a divan as my room is around 10ft 6" and a bed frame would make the gap between the foot of the bed and wardrobes very narrow. I also had to have sliding wardrobe doors as there isn't room for opening doors.

Oh rosegoldwatcher I didn't realise, sorry OP.

We’ve had a U.K. king (5ft) in a room 2.7m wide new build bedroom. Frame dimensions slightly wider than that though (64”). It was snug on the sides, even with bedside tables on the smaller side. However, the room was much longer (5m) so it felt spacious enough.

We’ve also had a U.K. king (5ft) that was exactly 5ft wide in a 3.3m wide room. Larger bedside chests (about 30” wide) so there was plenty of space on the sides with the bed and two chests fitting perfectly against the one wall. But the room wasn’t so long (3.6m) if memory serves. That room felt very full, even though it had a walk-in wardrobe so that didn’t take up more floor space. It was a spare room so if I was furnishing it again, I’d buy a smaller bed.

I think it depends if it’s your bedroom or a guest bedroom. I’d go for more space in the bed if it’s used every night or more space in the room if not.

Can you make a scale drawing?

Then before you commit, see if you can somehow mock the space up to see what the space around the bed feels like - eg make a 90cmwide “passage” using a wall on one side and cardboard on the other - see if it feels too squished.
