Advice on houseplants please

I have never owned more than a cactus! I would like to have a couple of plants in the house but have no idea where to start. Which are best for a beginner (that I won’t kill immediately)? Can I put them in one of those nice planter stands or are they just for fake plants? Can I get some plants that are a bit more mature? Can I order online? Tips and hints appreciated Smile

I just bought loads of “almost unkillable” plants from here

There are loads of house plants that are easy care. The main thing is to put them somewhere in the house where they’ll be happy. With the exception of cacti and succulents most houseplants prefer not to be placed in direct sunlight, which is something not many people seem to be aware of 😬 Another factor that contributes to the early demise of many houseplants is overwatering, so if you take it easy on that you should be fine!

I’ve found the easiest plants to be snake plants and zz plants. They can cope with pretty much any light condition. I water mine about once a month, so we’re talking really low water needs for those two! Peace lily is another plant that will cope with most conditions. That one will actually “tell” you when it needs water by going a little bit droopy.

There’s also lots of different types of Ficus that are easy (fiddle leaf fig, rubber plant, weeping fig) as long as they’re not in super bright sunlight. Dracaena are easy care too, monsteras..the list goes on!

I’ve found this company really good. They offer most plants in a range of sizes and have a nice collection of pots too

I’ve got a 80cm snake plant off Bakker.com and I’m very happy with it. Just waiting for the planter to arrive now.

Spider plants also good for beginners. They go very pale when they need watering and can cope with both over and under watering. Snake plants, jade succulents and begonias also good. I personally don't recommend Peace Lily's as a first time plant, they can be a bit fussy about amount of light and water.

It's best to look at where you intend to put a plant and look at the light levels to get the right plant.

A good plant shop should help you choose the right plant for your space.

I killed a peace lily. I swear she started wilting as I got into the car.

RIP Margot.

Thanks! Do you know where the best place to buy those planter things with stands is?
