A room of my own - how should I furnish it?? I'm so excited!!!

We are moving house shortly and I will be commandeering one of the bedrooms as my own space for sewing, yoga and reading.
I'm so excited! I haven't had my own room since before I moved in with now DH about 15 years ago and even then I had a bedroom in a rented house so no scope to do anything.
This room will be pale yellow/creamy with an oatmeal carpet. It's rented so not what I would have chosen but it'll be warm and at least it's not bright red ( I couldn't relax in a bright red room)!

The room is long (not sure of measurements, maybe 9m x 3m. And has a window at either end which is cool. The door is in the bottom left hand corner.

I'm thinking sewing equipment at the top of the room by/ under the window. Plants, candles. Space for a yoga mat to stretch out in the middle of the room.

But it's my reading corner I'm looking for ideas for.
Mustard chair, teal / hot pink/ navy cushion? Fluffy rug? Footstool? I don't know where to start on Pinterest. All ideas welcome

This is my dream! Can you create a window seat type thing, with a bookcase at the end? Or a big armchair with footstool. A hanging task lamp would be useful. A lovely throw for the chilly evenings.

Scented candles, maybe a plant?

What a dream!!!! One of our bedrooms was taken (stolen) for an office for my DH. That's the technical term, it's more of a pissing man cave! There's only one other bedroom spare and I have to leave that for guests so I'm very jealous! Plants, candles, nice big throws, a ginormous beanbag chair, a nice book case, lots of nice pictures in frames!!!!

@StuckOnTheM1 great ideas, thank you!

@ivfbabymomma1 that sucks 😬 my DH has his office and uses the garage too for workout equipment. I've decided to forgo a guest room ( we never have guests these days anyway) and my DS room can become a spare room the very occasional time it's needed. I decided I'll use my room every day but guests might stay once a month/fortnight max so my mental health takes priority!!

You might have just inspired me to steal our spare room GrinGrinGrin

I have this chair in citrus in my office. It's very yellow, very comfortable, and looks and feels more expensive than it is.
There are a number of other colours.

@ivfbabymomma1 go for it!!!

@JetBlackSteed thank you, they look lovely!

Exciting!!! Grin I would say hold off on actually buying stuff until you've moved in, and spent some time in the actual room.

Think about the light - is one of the window south-facing? That's where you want to do your sewing.

Gosh I’d love this! At one end I’d have my yoga stuff and the other end a big comfy armchair and footstool with a reading lamp over it. A nice bookcase with my books and drawers for bits and pieces. Then I’d have a shelving unit for all my succulents!

HeronLanyon · 21/11/2020 09:26

Once you’ve decided fully on which ‘third’ you want for what it sounds a good space to have some form of divider (subject to light needs). Even just a half height open (for light?) bookshelf or two At right angles to long wall to create sense of separate defined spaces - partic for your reading nook area. Different lighting in those spaces also.
How lovely. What a joy !

Great ideas and suggestions, thank you. I hadn't considered the way the windows face. I must find out.

I would want a tan leather Eames Lounge Chair with footstool. Like the one in Frasier. It comes in white too, which is a little more feminine.
I don't do multiple real candles because of the fire risk, but the natural looking LED battery flicker ones would do. 5 of those at different heights on a copper tray.
Lighting is important. Task lighting over the reading corner and sewing area.
A mid century style desk.
Accessories from West Elm for the shelving.
A velvet club sofa.
Plantation blinds.
Large green plants with shiny leaves.
A clean linen diffuser or citrus scent.
