Can cream on cream ever look contemporary?

My kitchen is similar to the attached, but smaller. The walls are currently taupe, but it needs re-doing, and i'm bored of it's dingyness. My kitchen is north facing.

I've been looking at whites, greys and blues for the walls, but along the way I've found that little greene white lead is not only a great colour match for the cupboards, but also has the most wonderful glow, even in my dingy kitchen. Dulux timeless looked a bit grey in there for example.

I hate painting the kitchen because of all the cutting in. Can cream on cream look contemporary, or will it just look country (which I dont like). Also, there will be no contrast if the walls match the cupboards, can this look good? Or is contrast important?

I think a lot of it depends on accessories, so modern handles, steer clear of gold wood tones and go for dark wood or metallics, or stoneware and ceramics in unusual designs. If you have lighting that isn't spotlights, you can bring in some contemporary or edginess there.

@RestorationInsanity thank you, great ideas. Love dark wood and metallics, so it sounds like it can work. Never imagined i'd want to add more cream!

For contrast I'd do an Eau de Nil colour, I had a similar kitchen in my last house. I painted it before selling and it looked more contemporary with Eau de Nil walls

We have similar cabinets and just redid our paint in Valspar Three Wishes, a green grey. We had the colour matched by Dulux as Valspar paint is awful.

Our kitchen is north facing and it looks so nice, way more contemporary than the previous cream walls. It was previously Dulux Natural Taupe 4.

Thank you. It is interesting that you both went in a similar direction to get that more contemporary look. I agree, cream on cream doesn't scream contemporary.

I'll get more testers. I've got some new handles coming and i'm keeping an eye out for contemporary kitchen accessories.

I'm still in love with that glowy paint. Truly sick of the dinge. But would be better if the cabinets were a different colour. I really dont want to paint the cabinets though.

Could you afford to replace just the doors and visible end panels and leave the rest in place?.

How much do you want to do? I think the issue is everything is the same colour. My first impression from the photos is that it needs a contrasting work surface or tiles or ceiling colour. Saw a gorgeous kitchen on a blog recently (image attached) with white units with dark green ceiling, green and white tiles and green chairs. It was gorgeous.

@RestorationInsantiy, the kitchen is only 3 years old so feels too wasteful.

@CountFosco, that kitchen is gorgeous. Dark green is one of the colours I have considered, I wondered if it might add to the gloom if the walls are dark. Definately up for painting the celing.

I'm only really looking to do wall/celing colour, and backsplash.
