I'm really struggling to come up with ideas for the living room, can anyone offer some advice please?

Livedandlearned · 14/11/2020 16:48

What colour is your sofa?

Autumnchill · 14/11/2020 18:11

Definitely need a picture and also when is the sun in the room?

singlikenooneislistening · 14/11/2020 20:24

I don't know what happened to my original post with photos so I'm hoping these ones post!

MyOtherProfile · 14/11/2020 20:27

Cpvinf - coving obvs!

stormageddmum · 14/11/2020 20:40

A lot of US homes have white brick fireplaces so I'd take a que from there. Any of these float your boat?

Bogardicia · 14/11/2020 20:48

I’m not keen on the white bricks at all. They’re very stark. I’d be tempted to make them an off white or neutral not too dissimilar to the walls or be a bit daring and paint them a chalky charcoal. Or if you could afford to, get it skimmed would be even better imo. Maybe some bright cushions too.

justaweeone · 14/11/2020 20:55

Think I would have bricks and wales the same colour or be really brave and rip out the bricks !!

Lightsontbut · 14/11/2020 21:07

Yes the sofa does not match the walls - two very different neutrals. How about white for the walls? or a dark gray? The bricks are not great at all really so I'd want them to disappear as much as possible rather than stand out so same colour as the walls?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 14/11/2020 21:13

I like grey. It's not about being or not being trendy for me.

I'd either go white or grey for the walls depending on the light in the room & the opposite fir the walls.

I'd sand back the mantle or replace it, so it's a light natural wood.

DianaT1969 · 14/11/2020 22:13

I'd paint the walls F&B Wevet (or colour match cheaper paint). Keep the coving white. Rip out the bricks and just have a painted hole as the fireplace. Remove the floating shelf on the right as it's a bit high and not symmetrical with the other side. Maybe put 2 matching console units from somewhere like made.com in the alcoves.

Rina66 · 14/11/2020 22:28

Watch a bit of Dream Home Makeover on Netflix, it’ll give you some ideas. There’s actually a house with a brick fireplace on there like yours. I can’t see what colour your carpet is? I think I’d go light grey in the walls, I’m not a F & B advocate for all things, but I do love their greys.

Autumnchill · 15/11/2020 06:43

We have a grey sofa in the front room and I've done the walls in Dulux Heartwood and they go great together. Everyone comments what a calming colour it is

Love your light fittings

singlikenooneislistening · 15/11/2020 08:50

Thank you all for your ideas, ideally I'd like to knock the bricks out but we are on a very tight budget so we need to make the best of what we have at the moment.
I'm loving some of the colour suggestions.

Knocking the bricks out is cheap. It requires a pick and a sledge hammer with a plastic sheet down and a few trips to the tip. The bricks are too heavy for the room. Removing them will open it up and make it feel more spacious. Watch some YouTube videos. Plastering can be done cheaply for now until you can afford someone. Or ask for a half day rate plasterer on NextDoor app.

singlikenooneislistening · 15/11/2020 09:41

That's good to know I think I will look at doing that as I really don't like the brick!
When I tried the dulux visualiser the heart wood looks very pink.

If you're on a tight budget just go for colourful accessories to liven things up a bit. Things like cushions, throws, candles, plant pots. I don't think there's anything wrong with what you have tbh. Just add a couple of contrasting colours to brighten the room.

CountFosco · 15/11/2020 12:01

If you don't like the bricks paint the wall and bricks the same colour to help them 'disappear'. Or you could whitewash the bricks rather than having them pure white if you'd prefer that.

Autumnchill · 15/11/2020 14:16

This is Heartwood (excuse Baxter!)

Chewbecca · 15/11/2020 14:20

A pale dusty pink like the pic above would be perfect.

Plus some more throws / cushions / texture.

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2020 14:20

I think it needs painting too, a more subtle warmer colour. Look at farrow and ball, if you wish to do it cheaper, just colour match to Valspar or dulux in matt.

I’d do the living room and dining room in two different tones of the same colour, so a sort of darker sage green or navy in the living room and a lighter one in the dining area.

The bricks are fairly bad in the white I’m afraid to say. I’d also paint them out, something much less harsh if you can’t remove them, so maybe if you go for green I’d do a dark olive green or a dark charcoal if I went foe them blue.

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2020 14:21

Is that a mattress in front of the fire place? I can’t work out what it is?

singlikenooneislistening · 15/11/2020 14:25

@Autumnchill that looks so nice and classy. I really do think I need to remove the bricks as I know I won't be happy.
We've just been discussing whether we need to paint the rooms different or keep them the same, such an awkward shape to utilise.
Thank you all you've given me some great ideas. Smile
