Tiled patio

Our garden badly needs an overhaul and I’ve just started coming up with ideas. It’s not a massive garden and is currently mostly laid to gravel, albeit the membranes have perished so keeping on top of the weeds is a nightmare. We are thinking about installing a patio along the back if the house, wide enough for a bbq and table/chairs, garden path, and lawn the rest.

I really like the look of tiled patios (example included) over wooden decking or stone.

Has anyone used tile? How practical is it - does it get grubby/slippy? Easy to damage?

I am sure that these days you can get tiles that are none slip for outdoor use and done well will look fabulous.

I suspect it will be pricey to get a decent job done though. Any imperfections, however slight will let water through and tiles will then crack. The base will have to be absolutely solid and level, the tiles laid super accurately. Grouting perfect and expansion gaps that are sealed with something long lasting as well as flexible. In other words specialist fitting - which equals £££££s

If money is no object then I think you can get a brilliant result.

Have you thought about small areas with tiles and the rest with paving. that might work well, and if low traffic, might be a bit less demanding.
