Do you prefer to have a similar colour scheme throughout a house/flat?

I live in a one- bedroom flat, and my living room is Jasmine White (Dulux) with warm autumn colours for the soft furnishings. My kitchen is currently also Jasmine White, with white cupboards. (The cupboards were that colour when I moved in.)

I’m thinking about whether to stick with Jasmine White for the kitchen walls, and go for a complementary colour for the cupboards - maybe a pale green - or whether to have very different, cooler tones for the kitchen, e.g. a pale bluey-green for the walls.

Do you think a house/flat, especially if it’s small, can feel too “bitty” with different tones in different rooms - e.g. autumn tones in one, summer tones in another - or do you think it’s nice to have variety?

I think variety is nice, one colour throughout I think is quite dull. Particularly white.

I have shades of green to be honest, but all different shades from pale eau de nil to farrow and balls vert de terre, to their french grey through to their pigeon, so it’s variations on a theme that blend but each room has its own identity.

Clashing or big differences I also don’t think is so good, so each room should have an identity but it should all flow.

What’s warm autumn colours though, do you mean brown and red?

Stick to one colour and bring in other colours in accessories and furnishings. Far easier to make changes with cushions and kettles, than repainting walls.

@Bluntness100 Your house sounds gorgeous!!

By warm autumn colours I mean maroon, plum, and some orange and yellow. (This might sound a bit odd, but I think it works!)

Thanks and no, those seem lovely colours . 😋

I think from the other posters comment everyone has different tastes. As said, I’d not paint all rooms the same colour, it doesn’t work for me, but works for others. However I like it to have a similar pallet. But each room to be different in its own right.

I see no reason why you can’t paint your kitchen in the colour scheme you like. The colours in your living room will work well with the white walls because they are strong colours. You don’t need to do the same in the kitchen.

The idea of a similar pallet throughout the house but each room having its own individuality sounds lovely!

Whole house is white.
Curtains give colour and pattern in each room.

I live in a small flat and each room is a different colour. I like to think it makes each space a separate zone rather than it just being one big room.

My house is neutral/pastel throughout. So not the same colour but it flows

Similar pallets on the wall would work really well in a small space. Also, take the autumnal colours into the other rooms. For example, you could use the plum in the bedroom eg duvet cover (it could be a lighter shade) and maybe, yellow into the kitchen for accessories. It could tie the whole place together.

My kitchen is apple white and the hallway was jasmine white, it worked quite well in that it was still white but not exactly the same

I'm in a small flat. I have warm soft neutrals throughout on the walls, using a slightly different neutral room to room, but no jarring changes from one room to the next.

The thing that made the biggest impact though (more than the wall colour) is the same flooring in every room (excluding the bathroom). It did feel very bitty before I did that.

I have a whole flat colour palate (all of the neutrals and 4 actual colours), but change the amount of each colour in each room so its not obviously matchy. The dominant colour in the living room, is the one least used in the bedroom for example.

I made all my decor choices based on creating a feeling of light and space, which has made it a bit safe and bland. I've made all the obvious choices iykwim. It looks lovely, dont get me wrong, but it's not unique.

I toy with the idea of embracing the smallness and going for a maximalist approach. Next time I decorate!

Thank you very much for the replies - some good ideas to think about!

What I like in other peoples homes is always very different to what I choose for my own. Probably because I tend to make decisions on a small basis ie room by room, because that is what my budget and headspace allows for.

I 100% agree about the same flooring, especially in a single level flat, making the whole thing come together. I would be a bit bored by the same colour (and only the same colour) walls in every room, but I do think it looks really nice.

What about a palette of colours that go brought the flat are used in each room?
