Panelling on walls. Pretty now but short sighted?

I did some panelling about 5 years ago on under the stairs cupboards and window seats and although I did consider doing it on the walls I chickened out because I didn't want to ruin our newly done walls. I see it everywhere now and I'm not so sure what to think of it. It used to look beautiful but now not so much (I think). Maybe I'm just seeing it everywhere it's putting me off. What do you think?

I'm not keen personally.

But it definitely has to be in the right house.

3 bd tce - definitely not.

I used to love it but I’m on a couple of Facebook home decoration sites and I’m now totally sick of seeing it. We moved into an old house last year and I had considered doing it in our hall and landing but I’ve gone completely off the idea now, I think I’m just so sick of seeing identi-kit houses with it.

I feel the same! We will be moving into a 3 bed semi soon and I was considering but I'm so unsure now.

I have panelling and have been ahead if the times as I've been here since 07. It's hard wearing in the hallway which as a lovely big light room is always admired.

WellTidy · 10/11/2020 12:50

I’ve wanted panelling in our hall stairs and landing for about ten years. Now that I see it everywhere (I follow lots of IG home/renovation type accounts) I don’t want to bother. It doesn’t help that it would be replacing anaglypta in our house, and everyone knows that anaglypta hides a multitude of sins (and ours is that kind of house). So I know that take long that off would involve a lot of making good before panelling could start.

Upupupintheair · 10/11/2020 12:52

Agree I love panelling in the right house. Friends of ours have just panelled their 60s semi - just no!!!!

SellFridges · 10/11/2020 12:52

Totally depends on the house.

In the hallway of a large Victorian era house - will look awesome.

In a 70’s semi - not so much.

Ginfilledcats · 10/11/2020 12:55

I agree defo over done in the wrk g house, new build or anything 1930s up looks daft. My 1800s house has it in a place or two.

Think it's the new grey isn't it

ohidoliketobe · 10/11/2020 12:58

Depends on house and type.
We have panel moulding in the lounge of our Victorian house, and imo looks good as it's in keepi g with traditional features - original fireplace, skirtings, coving etc. Not so great in a new build.
My Gran has pine woodgrain floor to ceiling in the kitchen of her 1930s terrace. Not so great but was all the rage back in the day

GroundAlmonds · 10/11/2020 13:01

Fine if it’s original (or reinstated), naff if it’s being imposed on the wrong house. Reminds me of the mock Tudor trend.

gretagreengrapes · 10/11/2020 13:02

It can look beautiful but I just see it as extra little ledges everywhere that will need dusting or vacuuming!

Chapterx · 10/11/2020 13:05

Definitely depends on the age of the house. In the right sort of house it looks beautiful but in a new build white and grey look nicer. I think that applies to most ages of house though, 70s furniture looks fab in a 70s house. Now I’m off to look for a 60s style front door as everything seems to be faux Victorian.

sarahc336 · 10/11/2020 13:13

I love it but can't help feel it's become a trend now that could go out of fashion, but like what happened with grey, suddenly very popular but now overly done. This is why I was put off putting it in my bedroom x

Ihaveyourback · 10/11/2020 13:26

We have a period house, with original panelling and it looks amazing. It is effortless too in terms of decoration. It really brings a sense of elegance and refinement.

It does depend on the house. I can't imagine it would be easy to pull off in a new build.

The half panelling looks great in cottages, and I love seeing that style in homes by the sea.

Mammylamb · 10/11/2020 15:58

As above I think it depends on the type of home. I didn’t know until this week that it was a trend. We have it beside the bay windows in our lounge and playroom. It really is beautiful. But we think it’s been there since the house was built: in 1889.

But, for a first I’m on trend “preens”

Ewandreams · 10/11/2020 20:50

I really want to do this in our house, in the hall, can anyone recommend a supplier? I am struggling to find one. Thank you

bubblegum7474 · 10/11/2020 23:02

You can get them from Homebase/b&q

Is this the square panelling?

kwaziseyepatch · 11/11/2020 10:06

DH has wanted to panel some of our walls for years, we do have a Georgian house so it would suit but it's not massive and I feel it would make the rooms feel smaller. Now it's everywhere I fear it will encourage him further!

CoolShoeshine · 12/11/2020 07:19

It’s a bit like the dado rails that everyone was looking to get rid of after the ‘90s!
I would actually disagree with some of the comments on here - I definitely wouldn’t put the current style panelling in a period home - it’s too modern - I’d prefer to see it in a spacious new build.
