The child's room is a nightmare

I'd post a photo but I'm too embarrased.

So, My ex husband built DS's bed in my house after we broke up, he helped me move basically. He put it at the end of the rectangular room and its ridiculous there and means there is space that we can't use etc. So I am moving it finally a year later, and I also need to sort some other furniture out.

DS's bookcase is too small and he needs a larger one, I'm not sure whether to go for one like the Billy from Ikea, or maybe the cubed kalax one? I wouldn't be putting cubes in it but he has funkos and things he likes to show off which are currently on the top of a trofast and it's just an absolute mess.

He also has some really old stag drawers that were my grandmothers, they're okay but really old fashioned. I don't know what would be best as he grows up. He is 9 - so we have no clothes he hangs up at the moment but we have lots of shoes and hoodies etc. And they have nowhere to live

help!

I like the style of kallax a bit better. It's more modern. Can you update the stag drawers with a lick of paint and maybe new handles?

rorosemary · 30/10/2020 14:05

Maybe painting the drawers a nice dark blue and putting some of those bruin leather strap handles on would make it more modern.

My daughters are 9 and I have they jailed cubes in there bedroom. They are amazing for storing stuff.

misskick · 30/10/2020 14:06

Those are nice handles! I had considered painting the drawers ages ago but I'm awful at anything DIY related so I hadn't approached it. But I think I could manage it? He has white furniture and a red wall. I would like to theme his room as a christmas present.

Also noticed Jysk do their own version of the kallax shelves and I am a lot closer to a jysk than an ikea. THESE ONES

For the stag drawers, chalk paint, there are a million videos on YouTube of people up-cycling furniture with chalk paint. No need to do any real prep, give it a good clean, a light sand, nothing major, then paint. Watch some videos to get the technique. I would top coat it with either the wax or some matt varnish.

Depending on space and budget, what about Ikea Pax wardrobes? You could choose not to put a door on one of them, maybe a single which could display his things but also have shelves and have books on. Does he need access to all the books or does it just look pretty? Pax comes in 2 depths 60cm deep and 35cm deep. Put Ikea Pax into Pinterest to see how other people have utilised them.

The interior fittings are relatively cheap and you can change stuff around, move shelves or baskets, put in a hanging rail etc. Please attach it to the wall though so it doesn't tip.

I use the Skubb interior fabric boxes to organise the children's clothes if they don't fill a drawer or basket fully. If you do plan Pax remember to take note of the hinges top, bottom and middle so you can't use those holes for shelves etc. So drawer runners are at the bottom and baskets are at the top meaning you can use baskets at the bottom of a wardrobe but not a drawer due to the hinges. I may have 20 or so Pax wardrobes all over the house Blush they are very versatile!

So fairly easy to do the drawers good!

I actually love pax wardrobes and have always wanted one, but I think his room may not fit one. He has a huge window as well which has a big radiator in front of it. I've just wasted time making a floorplan

He has a cabin bed, a medium high single trofast, then the "stepped" trofast, a short bookcase, the drawers, a desk and chair. And then an armchair which he reads in
