Plantation shutters

Thinking of getting plantation shutters for the four windows at the front of our house (c.£2,000)

If you have got them, are you pleased? Or am I just buying into a trend? What alternatives are there?

Thank you

I love mine and they look just as good after 5 years as they did when we had them done. I've gradually putting them in other rooms as and when we redecorate.

I opted for no tilt rods as I think they would be the thing to break from over use so I just open and close by moving one of the louvres.

I also have split louvres so that I can have the top open and the bottom closed for privacy if I want it.

I hate shutters - big bulky things that mean much less light in the room overall. Just get proper curtains instead.

I love mine. Look neat and fresh all the time. Easy to control etc

Roselilly36 · 29/10/2020 21:09

I love the look of them, but I don’t think they are very practical, we hired a holiday cottage with them at every single window, woke up every morning early, no matter how we adjusted them sunlight came through.

Have you looked at this company?

Sarah Beeny recommends that company. We looked into them but don't have room to be able to fold them back due to furniture so couldn't do it. My friend has them and I do love them. No tilt rods you just rotate the slat and all of them do it. She has split ones so can stack back the top ones allowing more light in but keeps the bottom ones in place and swizzes the blind open.

That seems very reasonable OP. We had 3 quotes for 4 windows and it was over 2k per window.
We went for wide slat blinds with strips. Look lovely, kind of shutter effect, not as bulky, can be completely pulled up out of the way, and a lot less £££! 1.5k for the whole house.
Meant we could do the whole house which is what I wanted.

We love ours. They can make the room look a bit bare on larger windows so we only have them in the bedrooms. Between the window and the shutters we have blackout roller blinds. The whole top floor of our house is now pitch black overnight and very well insulated.

Every time I see a house with one In reminded of Flowers in the Attic.

Had ours done recently and absolutely love them. Used a company called shutterlab that I can't recommend enough! Best quote by far and I shopped round a lot! Love the fact you can control light and privacy!

Love mine, they were here when we moved in almost 15 years ago and still look like new. They suit the style of the house though. They're not bulky at all, much less so than curtains.

Hyperfish101 · 30/10/2020 09:35

I like them but I think they use up a lot of light. We have wooden Venetian blinds instead. These have their own problems but were cheaper.

Our local blind shop has stopped calling them plantation shutters.

GreekOddess · 30/10/2020 09:38

Love mine. We only have them in the living room and our bedroom due to the cost. We have Venetian blinds everywhere else. Curtains wouldn't look right in our house. I love the look of them, fresh clean lines. Dh wasn't keen before we got them but he was converted once he saw the results.

Thanks everyone! I am going to go for it!!

Dust. Nightmare to clean. Especially kitchen ones as they tend to get greasy. I was so glad to leave the house I had them fitted in.

GreekOddess · 31/10/2020 09:54

@MirandaMarple. I don't find them any harder to clean than Venetian blinds. I dust every day anyway so don't notice a build-up.

It's difficult to keep most window dressings clean in the kitchen which is one of the reasons why we opted to keep our kitchen windows bare in the kitchen this time.
