How to paint my bed?

changeofnameforchangeofbed · 10/10/2020 22:11

I've name changed as the photos are very outing!

I have this very solid teak bed. It is a super king and was my bed throughout my marriage. That marriage has ended (very badly), but the bed is still going strong!

I'm going to get a new mattress, but I can't afford to get a new bed frame as well.

So my question is how can I paint the bed to give it a new fresh look?

What type of paint should I use? What colour? How should I prepare the wood?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Are you sure? For the price of a super king mattress you can buy a new double bed frame and double mattress. Have a look at Wayfair.co.uk

Give it a light sand all over and then prime it with two coats of an all in one primer and undercoat to stop wood knots and the dark colour coming through. Then if it was me I’d paint with a satinwood paint. Chalk paint is easy to apply with little prep but chips easily and isn’t particularly durable I’ve found. You’ll probably need to do 3 coats of paint if it’s a light colour to get good coverage. Happy up-cycling!

Just finished painting a similar frame. Sanded then used a spray furniture primer (utterly useless) then a stain block primer (which was quite dear) then a chalk paint. Took about seven or eight coats (incl spray) to not be patchy, the dark wood was a real pain. Cost me about £60 in paint + small foam roller kit, but I do have some left over. Not sure I'd bother again tbh! DD has been told she is keeping this bed til she leaves home!

Oh and it was only a small double rather than a super king, though it had a footboard as well as a headboard.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 10/10/2020 23:09

A REALLY good primer is the key here. I ave used this one even on laminate and painted emulsion over the top and it stuck brilliantly.

I tend to use Valspar 700 for almost everything as it goes on smoothly and is tough.
A layer or two of Matt varnish on top will protect it as well

And can I please add WHAT A CUTE POOCH!

I'm glad I asked. I had no idea there would be so many stages involved! So sand, prime, paint, varnish?

I'll be at it a while! But I think it's will be worth it as it's such a solid and good quality frame.

Don’t varnish the dog!

(Have just accidentally wood stained a Westie today)

changeofnameforchangeofbed · 10/10/2020 23:25

@NewAndImprovedNorks well I'll have a trouble getting her off it - thinks it's her own bed- diva dog! That's why I can't downsize the bed- 2 dogs and my DD in it with me all the time!

Thank you for all the tips. I feel good about tackling it now and promise to avoid painting the dog!

Nah. You don't need to do all of that. Get a chalk paint, I use Annie Sloan.

Turn tin of paint upside down

Wipe the bed frame down with a damp cloth and let it dry.

Paint the bed.

Then, IF you want to you can put a lawyer/varnish over the top.

Job done.

changeofnameforchangeofbed · 14/10/2020 11:10

Woah! That sounds much easier. How many coats do you think it will need?

@MJMG2015 also how many tins do you think will cover the frame? Thank you for any tips, I appreciate your help.

She has a good quality solid wood bed, why would she buy an lower quality bed she doesn't need? We really need to stop replacing things on a whim.

The Frenchic company are a cheaper alternative to Annie Sloan for chalk paint.
Nice range of colours. They have a busy Facebook page where users post lots of tips about using their paints, and you can ask questions (preparation, application of paint (roller? Brush?), which paint is best for your bed and how much to use etc)

The surface you paint needs to be smooth and very clean. Sugar soap is what you need for this; you need to wear gloves and clean in a ventilated room; it's powerful stuff but very effective at removing all dirt and grease.

Hope it all goes well.

Another recommendation for the frenchic group on fb.

changeofnameforchangeofbed · 16/10/2020 11:59

Thank you for that tip @Pralinelatte and @mummyh2016. I've asked to join the FB group. Looks like I'll get all my answers there! Hopefully even a complete beginner will be able to manage this. I'm off to change my name back now!

Sorry, I missed your post!

With Annie Sloan one tin will be enough and probably 2 coats.

I haven't used the French Chic.

I've used AS for years. I love blending her colours too.

Let us know how you get on

Won't the lawyer mind?
