Feather/down vs pure down duvet - is down worth the extra expense?

Argh - going round in circles. We're currently under a crappy synthetic duvet and I'm after something more luxurious and with better heat regulation.

Can anyone tell me whether a pure (or 80%ish) down duvet is loads better than feather mix and therefore worth the expense? Thank you!!

We have a wool duvet, which is brilliant for heat regulation. Toasty but not sweaty. And nobody is being mean to geese (who can be fuckers, admittedly).

Get a Baavet wool duvet

Eve · 07/10/2020 15:06

I had a lovely down duvet but sweated at night so much with it on when back to synthetic..

TeddyIsaHe · 07/10/2020 15:08

I also have a wool duvet and it’s far better than down. Lovely and cool in summer and warm without making your entire body sweat in winter.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 07/10/2020 15:08

We swtiched from feather and down to pure down. Down is lighter but also clingier which makes it warmer than the same tog in feather and down. I find our pure down quilts a bit too warm - we're still using a 4.5 tog.

Oh you baaaaaastards - I knew there'd be a Mumsnet wool duvet pile on. That's even more expensive 🤣 Actually v good to know, though.

And geese are indeed fuckers, but yes, I was only looking at ethically certified down.

Thank you - any more experiences really appreciated before I spend vast amounts more on project cozy-second-lockdown!

haha! I was coming on here to advise getting a wool duvet and I see others got here first! Grin

Honestly, they are brilliant. I got mine about 10 years ago and it's still good as new. Mine is actually two duvets - one thin and one thicker that you can popper together to make a super-duvet. It's wonderfully warm in the winter but never over warm.

OperationallySound · 07/10/2020 15:31

Wool here too, sorry Grin We recently slept under a down/feather duvet for the first time in years. There's just no comparison, wool keeps you at a perfect temperature all night long. I've even bought wool toppers for our beds too. Might as well move in with a sheep really!

GoatsInBoats · 07/10/2020 15:52

We have wool pillows too, OP. Get your credit card out.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 07/10/2020 16:35

You are all SHEEPLE! However, I thank you from the bottom of my heart....sounds like I may have dodged an expensive downy bullet!

Next question, then - is it worth getting a 3 in 1 wool duvet, or do you find the temperature regulation so good that it's not worth it? This is going to be jolly expensive, as DH and I have separate duvets, and I'm replacing for both of us 😬

I came on to say wool duvet as well! Baavet all the way Grin

I'm usually cold at night and DH is like a furnace, but the same wool duvet does us year round. We couldn't get away with that when we used feather duvets. In the coldest nights of winter, I do chuck a throw on top of my side only. We have a well insulated house, though, so it never gets too cold indoors.

I would say you won't need a 3 in 1 wool duvet unless your bedroom is freezing in winter and boiling in summer. Wool is better than feather/down at dealing with temperature extremes.

geekaMaxima · 07/10/2020 16:45

...and I second the wool pillows. They're great - just the right amount of support, softness, springiness, etc. I love mine more then the duvet Blush

Seeingadistance · 07/10/2020 16:56

I got my wonderful wool duvet from The Wool Room.

Fab - sounds as if I need to have a think about what weight might suit, geekaMaxima.

And thanks, Seeingadistance - I'd just been looking on there!

Oh dear....this is not boding well for our spending....Grin

I've bought them now - all your fault! 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 Thanks for all the advice!

We bought our wool duvet from John Lewis and it’s fabulous! Best duvet I have ever had.

We used it right though the summer until now and it just changes temperature to suit...

QueenOllie · 07/10/2020 21:31

I have a wool room duvet I got last Christmas and it's fantastic. I managed to bribe my dad by showing him a £££££ wool one, then showing him the wool room one which then seemed a complete bargain Grin

JeanMichelBisquiat · 08/10/2020 09:11

Woohoo! So excited now - I was really fed up when I had to crawl back under my stupid synthetic duvet last night!

OP posts:
OperationallySound · 08/10/2020 14:36

You won't regret it. We use the same one all year round.

Snog · 08/10/2020 14:43

Wool duvets are fab especially if you and DH run at different temperatures as magically the same wool duvet will work well for both of you.

bouncydog · 11/10/2020 08:36

Woolroom duvets and pillows for us too. They don’t move round in the duvet covers and are fabulous. Also bought a mattress topper. Woolroom often have special offers on too. Highly recommended!

MidnightFlit · 11/10/2020 08:39

Us too! The other thing I like about our wool duvets is that they're quite flat so take up less visual space in a small bedroom.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 12/10/2020 13:13

Very happy with our Woolroom duvets! The one thing I find really weird is that when you get into a cold bed, it takes longer to get snuggly under the duvet than it did with synthetic. However, they do seem to be way better at keeping the temperature balanced really nicely (am also really loving the very very vague sheepy smell 🥰).

Thank you for this. Need new duvets and was resigned to synthetic as the cruelty of down was a no-no. (Don’t google).
