Diptyque are amazing candles. I find they really do scent the whole room. Cheaper but just as good are St Eval candles. If you can get to a TK Maxx I find their Sand and Fog ones are great but the DW home ones don’t smell when lit. Very occasionally the have brands like Cir, Neom and This Works in there too which are always worth buying. I once found some incredible candles from an American brand in there (can’t remember which one) that were originally hideously expensive and they smelled beautiful. I’m a bit of a scented candle addict.

I have never tried a Rituals candle but their Reed diffusers are bloody brilliant, best I’ve ever used.

orangenasturtium · 02/10/2020 14:24

From a health point of view, soy candles are better for you.

From a fragrance point of view, I prefer Dyptique to Jo Malone. The strength of the Jo Malone candle fragrance is more variable, in my experience. I also love the Crabtree and Evelyn discontinued Noel candles but I would guess their other candles are similar quality. I also like the White Company, Neom, Santa Maria Novella, and Bella Freud candles I am of an age where candles are the default gift Grin

Mid range, I have had St Eval, M&S, Wax Lyrical, and Lily Flame candles (Waitrose/JL sell the last two). They have all been good value. Possibly marginally less good than the expensive brands.

Student DS loves a smelly candle and I have been impressed with his Aldi/Primark Jo Malone dupes. Ikea and Muji candles are not bad either. I think the quality differs wildly between different fragrances in the same range of budget candles. You do get the occasional candle that smells great unlit but has no scent lit (I call it herbal tea syndrome...). It's worth trying them though at a few pounds a shot.

pollypork · 02/10/2020 14:35

love Diptyque

BasiliskStare · 02/10/2020 14:43

I have had White company and I think they are quite good. If were paying the same price I would go for Dyptique over Jo Malone but this is me smelling then at other people's houses.

The Times had Tom Dixon , Alexia Peck & Fortnum and Mason in their list of best candles as I recall

PegasusReturns · 02/10/2020 14:45

Diptyque are much better than jo malone in terms of how long the scent lasts and how well it diffuses.

areallthenamesusedup · 02/10/2020 14:46

candle addict here....Jo Malone...v highly variable....some ok, some awful re strength.
Bamford good but pricy.

applepineapple · 02/10/2020 14:50

I love Boy Smells. Definitely look at Osmology (website), dangerous but good GrinGrin

EasterIssland · 02/10/2020 14:53

I love fresh, subtle, more natural smells and SKANDINAVISK is right up my street. I like that they don’t have a massive range, so it’s not too hard to decide which one to get 😁

My favourite one is the Fjord Candle. Lots of layers to that scent, yet somehow quite subtle and cosy. According to DS it’s the best scent in the world, which is high praise indeed from a teenage boy!

I also really like Oy, which is like a fresh sea breeze, but is perhaps more of a Spring/ Summer candle. And if you like fresh pine & forest smells, Skog is lovely too. My DH says it reminds him of a cheap pine freshener, but in a really good way...whatever that means 😂

EasterIssland · 02/10/2020 15:42

@orangenasturtium Santa Maria novella.. is it from the pharmacy in Florence next to the church with the same name? I went to the pharmacy but didn't buy anything but remember they had fragrances and so

From a health point of view, soy candles are better for you.

Have you got a source for this? I have heard that thats not true - and that farming for soy is actually worse

www.lonestarcandlesupply.com/blog/soy-vs-paraffin-wax/
The biggest debate we see when it comes to paraffin wax is whether or not it is "bad" for you. You can find plenty of articles online talking about how paraffin wax releases "soot" into the air which is bad for you to breathe in. That statement is not exactly false, but it's not exactly true either. BOTH paraffin wax and soy wax can create soot depending on how the candle is made and how it is burning. While the soot is not good for your respiratory system it is, generally, not dangerous; it is the chemicals that the candle is emitting that may be hazardous to your health. Paraffin wax can produce certain emissions that can compromise the air quality in your home. These may include: alkans, alkenes and toluene which have all been reported to have harmful effects on humans. However the amount of these chemicals that are being released into the air are so minimal that most people are not affected by them.

Contrary to popular belief, soy wax candles can emit chemicals into the air as well. Over 90% of soybean crops in the United States are genetically modified and are grown using pesticides. Some soy wax manufacturers process their soybean oil to filter out any genetically modified material as well as any "potentially present herbicides or pesticides" (source: www.ecosoyabrands.com). Not all soy wax manufacturers do this though which means a good portion of soy wax candles have the potential to emit chemicals into the air from herbicides and pesticides.

Yes, it is @EasterIssland They have an online store and 2 tiny branches in London, one in Piccadilly Arcade and another in Walton Street.

orangenasturtium · 02/10/2020 16:16

Nothing peer reviewed @MidnightCitrus but the research comes from a credible source. Here is the NHS take on it, which is pretty much in line with my personal opinion, it's worth bearing in mind but not being paranoid about, bacon is far more dangerous for your health...

www.nhs.uk/news/cancer/candles-romance-and-cancer/

I agree with you that soy is terrible for the environment.

MyNameForToday1980 · 02/10/2020 16:19

If you fancy splashing out the Cire Trudon are amazing (we get Ernesto)- BUT if you're not into candles the price will make you wince. Candles are one of the things I enjoy most, so I'm only spending the equivalent of what I'd spend on any other hobby on them (or at least that's how I justify it to myself).

merryhouse · 02/10/2020 16:44

@MidnightCitrus how does one filter out the genetically modified soy oil from the non-genetically modified soy oil?

Vicliz24 · 02/10/2020 16:58

I love St Eval candles . Their sea salt is a permanent fixture in my bathroom and for Christmas their Inspiritus are amazing.

orangenasturtium · 02/10/2020 17:19

Presumably they mean they filter out any organic material so that all that is left are the fatty acids that make up the soy oil, therefore there is no genetically modified dna left @merryhouse. I would have thought they needed to do that anyway...

It all seems a bit meaningless pseudo-sciencey to me. "People are scared of geneticaly modified crops so we'll tell them that we remove them so they think our product is safer than products that don't, even though it is entirely unnecessary..." It's not as if any traces of genetically modified DNA in the candle can evaporate and be inhaled when you burn it, then recombine with your DNA Grin
