Have you painted furniture with F&B Estate Eggshell?

If so, were you pleased with it? And was it hard-wearing? A painter told me that F&B paint scuffs very easily, but I don’t know whether that’s just the chalky one for walls, and whether Estate Eggshell would be tougher. Thanks!

You can use emotion but just put 2 coats of varnish on the top.

I have used Estate eggshell, and have varnished with Polyvine varnish which helps. All painted furniture is delicate to an extent. Difficult to get something truly bombproof. Still worth it though.

Thank you for the replies. Varnishing is an interesting idea. Did you find it hard to make the varnish go on smoothly?

Polyvine is not like traditional varnish you may be thinking of. It goes on very easily, is not thick or gloopy (you could use a sponge applicator it's so thin).. It dries very quickly and the brushes are washable in water. It's fantastic stuff. I have even used the dead flat decorators varnish on wallpaper to protect it, and you would never know. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I painted my wardrobes and bedside tables 4 years ago in London Clay. They still look really good. Sand and then use the Farrow and Ball primer as it makes a huge difference to the finish and longevity. You will also need less paint as it helps with coverage. Check which colour primer is best as some colours work better with a darker undercoat. I figured since I was spending on the paint, I should do a proper job and I’m glad I did. I also did my stairs this year and they are also lasting well

Yes agree with pp. The F&B primer is essential (if you Google, you'll find all the professional decorators saying this). Also it hardens over a period of time (really a good couple of weeks). I kept going back to it every few hours when it was still tacky but if you just leave the paint to cure/harden over a week or so without using the furniture / putting things on it, it's very hard wearing (much better than emulsion on the walls).

Thank you so much for the replies. How long should I leave the primer to dry before using the paint?

@Blackberrycream @Africa2go Did you use F&B estate eggshell paint, or would you recommend a different F&B paint for furniture?

Thank you!! Smile

Also, if I use the primer, will I need just one coat of paint?

@MakeOfThatWhatYouWill That sounds great!

Someone on a similar thread, last week, wrote that the had had good results painting furniture with Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell.

I sent away for the paint cards - they have a phenomenal range of colours.

Jessie2345679 · 01/10/2020 08:34

Thanks - I will look into that!

I’ve just googled polyvine varnish, and it says that applying over emulsion can draw contaminants from the paint. www.polyvine.com/index.php/en/varnishes/water-based-varnishes/decorators-varnish
Wondering whether anyone has found this to be a problem!

I painted out wardrobes with it about 4 years ago and they have held up so so well I'm really surprised, they get a lot of bashes and knocks from the kids and there's no places where the paint has even chipped, am really impressed. I painted other wardrobes in the house with b&q equivalent and they came up awfully

Africa2go · 01/10/2020 09:28

@Jessie2345679 yes used the Estate Eggshell. A day or so for the primer to dry, I did 3 coats of the paint leaving 2 days between each coat.

Jessie2345679 · 01/10/2020 14:39

Thank you - that’s really helpful!

I’ve not used F&B, but did use Little Green which seems good!
Finish is really impressive (lightly sanded, couple of coats, no brush marks coverage really good etc). I’d recommend it.

It’s held up well but only done a couple months ago so can’t really comment on longevity.

Blackberrycream · 02/10/2020 22:01

I just had a root around to find the tins. It is estate eggshell. The finish is a dull sheen. It’s not shiny at all. As the previous poster said, leave the primer to dry for a day. I tend to rush but it’s worth doing properly. I always try to go to the shop if you have one nearby as the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Blackberrycream · 02/10/2020 22:06

Also , I did two coats of paint over the primer but the second was really just going over the odd brush mark.
