Talk to me about yellow rooms

Our new house has a north-facing full width extension across the back of the house, opens via archways into the kitchen & dining rooms - eventually we’ll open up the whole space, but not yet. There are sliding patio doors to the garden on one else and windows across the other so it’s not too dark apart from the aspect, I’m going to have a sofa/daybed next to the doors to view the garden from, at the other end our kitchen will spill through the archway with some free-standing furniture - eventually a new fitted kitchen will span the current kitchen into the extension.

It’s currently a kind of pale lime/acid green which I do not like at all, far too cold for the light in that room. I am thinking a warm/golden yellow - bright and cheerful for the mornings, and supposed to be good for appetite! DP keeps just saying no to yellow full stop, but I think he just lacks imagination - or am I delusional that with the right shade it can be welcoming and cheerful without being headache inducing?

Who has yellow rooms and have loved them? Any particular shades you’ve loved?

We did one of our north facing bedrooms daffodil white which is just a slightly lemon white. It is very nice and bright but not too yellow. I can take a pic if you want?

I did my daughters walls yellow and it worked very well warming it up. Get a few testers and see which one suits best, some are "warmer" than others

Finding the right yellow is super important. Our east facing room (but dark due to small windows and trees outside) is on its second shade of yellow as the first was too acid and looked insipid in the afternoons. We now have Little Greene Yellow Pink which is incredible in the mornings and by lamp light and still warm enough in the colder lights.

Our DC have yellow rooms - Farrow and Ball dayroom yellow (little rooms which is the only way we could afford the paint!) it’s lovely, so warm and we went for the wipeable 9% sheen. I’m very happy Grin

One of our bedrooms is sunflower yellow and I love it. It is south facing and feels lovely and warm and sunny.

Lemonylemony · 23/09/2020 13:01

Hmm yellow pink is intriguing! Looks a bit like halfway between mustard and lemon curd!

I don’t want too brown or too acidy..... going to have to do quite a few test swatches I think

Only in big rooms, and go 3 shades lighter than you thought.
Love a yellow room, me.

We have a yellow living room, Dulux Banana Split, it's lovely, bright during the day and cosy at night.

Pigletpoglet · 23/09/2020 13:13

We have Farrow's Cream, which is right on the boundary of cream and yellow. It's very warm, but not too dark or in your face.

Looks more yellow on the pic than it does in real life...

TheSmallAssassin · 23/09/2020 13:18

Our attic bedroom is painted in Dulux Californian Sands, can't remember which number, but one of the lighter ones. It's lovely, warm and light at the same time.

TheSmallAssassin · 23/09/2020 13:21

(looking at the chart they look more orangey, but the room "feels" yellow 😁)

Thunderbolted · 23/09/2020 13:24

I know you've asked for yellow, but we have this in a north facing room and it's really lovely: www.lime-mortars.co.uk/b2c/breathable-paint/earthborn/claypaint/ballet-shoe/2.5-litre?gclid=EAIaIQobChMInarF9qH_6wIVg4XVCh2LDwQFEAQYASABEgKKO_D_BwE

In real life, because the room is dark, it looks a lot less pink. Half the time it just looks like a very soft white.

I had an upstairs north facing bathroom painted gentle yellow from Crown. I'd used it in a previous house where it looked fab, but it didn't really work north facing.

Just be aware that with tester paints it's really hard to tell what the overall look will be. A few times I've chosen a darker shade and been worried, but when painted on a whole room/wall your choice will seem a lot lighter/less full on.

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2020 13:29

We had a yellow bedroom in a rented house that got sun in the morning until about 2pm. It was lovely and "warm". The colour would be bet described as "egg yolk". We painted our hallway and stair well in the same colour when we bought our house. It was a Deluxe colour, I think it was called Sunshine or Sunflower.

I love a yellow room.

This is what earthborn ballet shoe looks like in my north facing room.
Also just remembered we painted a north facing study a sandy yellow and it didn't work.

Our hallway is ‘you are my sunshine’ by . It’s a lovely warm yellow.

I’ve always had yellow rooms growing up as my dad is colour blind and it’s one of the only colours that doesn’t look ‘Griege’ and sludgy to him. My boys are also colour blind and they feel the same, so we will probably always have yellow rooms too. I love bright colours too. Hate bland pale rooms.

MrsKoala · 23/09/2020 19:36

By Valspar! Sorry, wasn’t being purposely vague there.

Lemonylemony · 23/09/2020 20:19

Oh I love that one @MrsKoala thankyou

The ballet shoe one looks kinda sandy on my phone

So many options!

We have a bright yellow kitchen, it gives you sunshine on a rainy day, not headache inducing and we always get compliments on it. I love it! Think it is dulux sunflower symphony.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/09/2020 18:41

I have Dulux Buttermilk throughout downstairs (small house). Sitting room is north facing so the yellowness warms it up. Dining room and kitchen are south facing (and dining room has patio doors into the garden) so the yellowness glows - not blinds Grin - when it's sunny, and looks good when looking out into the garden.
