What can I do with these ugly sliding doors?

Any ideas? It’s a fitted wardrobe in my dressing room which I’m finally trying to make slightly more presentable. Ideally I’d like them either mirrored or a matte paint finish but no idea how to do it.

I’m trying to do it myself with no practical skills and trying not to spend a fortune.

Any suggestions? I like the colour of the walls so probably keeping that.

Hopeful bump

Perhaps using a pretty sticky wallpaper on the panels could be an option?

Saz12 · 15/09/2020 15:45

You can get replacement wardrobe doors if that helps?
The ones I’ve found are sold online for £50 or so per door, but all seem to come from same manufacturer but sold through different outlets. I’ve not actually ordered them yet though!

I think painting over gloss doors is very tricky to do well.

Not helpful I know, but they're really not that bad. Quite like their simplicity, and they seem to bounce light around.

Maybe harmonising the wall colour with them will make them less obvious?

FlamedToACrisp · 15/09/2020 19:11

Can you lift them out of the frame, or are they fixed in place? If you can get them out, you might try spray-painting them.

GoneAndDoneItAgainAgain · 15/09/2020 19:45

Do you not think 11stonetess? They’re so bloody beige and shiny.

I don’t think I can take them out - there doesn’t seem to be any fixings that can be unscrewed. I thought I could possibly spray them in situ. That would probably end up a total shit show though!

I think they’re rather nice.

GoneAndDoneItAgainAgain · 15/09/2020 19:52

I love the idea of it all being open plan and everything organised and looking beautiful. In reality though it’s where I shove anything that I haven’t had time to tidy away when I have guests over. So it’s normally half beautiful, half overflowing, badly stacked laundry baskets.

if you want to remove them you'll need to lift them up and then angle off the runners, difficult to explain. You may be able to get them replaced if you go to a sliding wardrobe supplier, it'd probably take them about 10 minutes to replace so you may be able to get it done fairly cheaply. alternatively something like this www.etsy.com/listing/517422532/door-murals-door-wallpaper-door-decals?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Search_UK_DSA_GGL_Categories_Home_New&utm_ag=Home%2BDecor&utm_custom1=k_EAIaIQobChMIpMGmyevr6wIVyIBQBh0kbAKhEAAYASAAEgIvtfD_BwE_k&utm_content=go_9968986279_104634489830_433121515198_dsa-42869759572_c_&utm_custom2=9968986279&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpMGmyevr6wIVyIBQBh0kbAKhEAAYASAAEgIvtfD_BwE might work

pickingdaisies · 15/09/2020 20:00

I don't think you can do much that will improve them. Because of the gloss finish, you'll be in danger of making them worse. I think they're ok, just not very exciting, I'd think you're better off putting up with them until you can afford to replace them.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 15/09/2020 20:47

of course they can be removed! I'm amazed you've never had the lovely experience of them coming off the rails? You just lift them up and then in at an angle, so you can pull them right out of the space. Watch out, they will be heavy. You can paint them to match the walls - cheap and cheerful, paper them or take them out completely.

I lived with mirrored ones for years and hated them every day. It wasn't until my house was on the market, and I overheard the ultimate purchaser say 'first thing to go is these ugly doors' that it occurred to me that I could have just changed them out. New house has beautiful wood louvered doors, white, match all of the trim, and it is a delight!

Othering · 15/09/2020 20:50

I don't love them but they're not awful. I think if you had different paint colour on the walls, they'd look so much better. That would be so much easier and cheaper too.

minipie · 15/09/2020 20:55

I would suggest looking for some kind of sticky back vinyl - the sort that’s sold for covering up dated worktops. But applying it neatly will be a lot easier if you can take the doors off

AlwaysCheddar · 20/09/2020 08:07

Maybe changing the colour of the curtains would help so it’s not all the same colour. I like the doors.

MargotLovedTom1 · 20/09/2020 10:03

I used Plastikote spray paint to update a wall cabinet which had a laminate surface; just lightly sanded over first to give the surface a key which you'd definitely need to do with that gloss finish. Worked really well and made a huge difference, and a can was only about six quid from B&M although I'm sure you'd need more than one can.

Alternatively you could paint with Zinsser primer then finish with whatever paint you want. Would be easier to do either of these jobs with the doors out and flat on the floor though Grin.

Harriedharriet · 23/09/2020 05:43

I know you said you like the wall color but between the doors, wall, carpet and window you have a lot of pale going on. Why not amp up the doors? Casing around them instead of the aluminum, paint casing to match the window and then. Very sting beautiful darkish color above the doors/casing. Add better handles and you could have a beautiful feature in them. They are different op. Embrasse them??😂

Harriedharriet · 23/09/2020 05:45

Very badly written post - sorry. *very daring darkish color
*embrase

Harriedharriet · 23/09/2020 05:47

OMG - EMBRACE.

Enough! To bed...

Catiopea · 23/09/2020 06:18

If you want minimal work you could just add some decals to the doors, maybe echo the colour/theme somewhere else with cushion/bed covers?

damnitdamnit · 23/09/2020 06:18

You need to frenchic paint them join the group on FB it will give you loads of ideas

Kdubs1981 · 23/09/2020 17:56

Zissner primer is supposed to be great, then paint with anything you like!

AmandaHugenkiss · 24/09/2020 15:24

You can buy mirror tiles which stick on, or put nice wallpaper on. But honestly getting them off and putting up nice cheap replacements should be really easy. Ikea is your friend in this! Probably almost as cheap as doing them up nicely.
