What colour with these 'vintage' 80s tiles?

Currently doing up the bathroom on a minimal budget- until we can afford to do it properly. Whole thing is tiled and it's not a tile/colours I would ever have chosen. My strong preference is to make the most of what exists rather than paint a whole bathroom. Any ideas of what colours to put with them? Pics attached to show the tile in different lights.

Do you like the tiles? Could you paint them if not with something like frenchic al fresco paint

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/09/2020 22:41

If it's all tiled, are you just wanting to choose accessories?

Sage green?

foodtoorder · 13/09/2020 22:42

Personally I would go with just a white colour or tone.
Replace toilet roll holders/ towel rail with new chrome and add some natural wood accessories.
Make sure the floor is sound/sealed properly with silicone. It adds a freshness.
A nice modern blind will update the whole room.
Ensure taps are also modern. Easily replaced and fairly reasonable for something cheap and cheerful.

I agree with a PP above on natural wood, and add some plants.

Alternatively something dark like navy or a dark green.

I explained it better in the first post I wrote, but promptly lost it so to clarify. The colour will mainly be the floor - which was a vile mustard yellow carpet which has been ripped up and the floorboards beneath most likely painted. I also need to repaint the windowsill and skirting.

I did consider painting the tiles - I have looked at frenchic but have seen mixed reviews on how it actually holds up in wet areas as it is not designed for that purpose. I'd rather look at tiles ai dislike than peeling painted ones.

Attached is a pic which shows how the bathroom was previously.

Oh yes, I will also be painting a new bath panel which I will make from MDF and some simple moulding.

If the tiles are white, paint it white

If the tiles are magnolia/cream/off-white/beige, paint it in a toning, cream/white.

White. White. White. Just, you know, white.

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/09/2020 23:03

Ok, I'd go for either natural wood or very plain neutral floor but get a lovely blind with a bit of pattern and pick out a colour from that for accessories?

ivykaty44 · 13/09/2020 23:08

I’d leave the tiles as they are, pretty non descriptive

Pick a colour for towels and accessories that you like in autumn colours?

Whitewash painted flooring

Thanks for all the suggestions. Some food for thought.

A colourful blind and pick out a colour to match up towels

I used a waterproof seal varnish on the floorboards to protect them

Saz12 · 13/09/2020 23:36

It’s difficult to paint gappy wood white as all the gaps show up dark and are therefore obvious. If you’re intending to paint floor, it would look lovely white if it’s in good nick. Otherwise I’d consider going for a darker colour just for that reason. Maybe navy floor paint, towels in mustard and navy to tone down the shiny beige ness of the tiles?

NavyBerry · 14/09/2020 00:08

Not so much the colour of the tiles that make them look dated but their shape. You cannot change the shape so focus on other things. It should look good once refreshed a bit. Good luck

I'm currently in the process of sorting out the floor using pine slivers in the gaps. This process has been slowed down slightly by me being a total numpty and putting a nail into a water pipe whilst i was fixing a creaky board! (Rookie mistake) but looks pretty good on the part I have done. There are parts I will have to use wood filler on though and one new board which stands out like a sore thumb hence the plan to paint.

The tiles are quite neutral, so you could go with beige and white, especially if you can find some nice striped towels. Alternatively, you could treat the beige tiles as a non-colour, and add a blue or green as an accent colour.

I’m going to be the odd one out and suggest you own it and go something bright. I think a white painted floor is going to look dirty quickly (and show up all the random hairs/marks. Personally I’d go for a french navy pain on the floor, white or cream to match the tiles wood work/bath board and a funky wallpaper (or bright paint).

30shousecat · 17/09/2020 14:43

Thanks for the input Cake. I have definitely considered going darker for the floor, think I am going to have to try a few colours and see what works.

There isn't really anywhere to paint or wallpaper unless I remove some tiles (apart from a tiny bit round the window alcove where the tiles had come off) as all of the walls are tiled floor to ceiling. Aside from not being too sure how it would hold up, that is one of the reasons I haven't wanted to paint the tiles - there is a lot of tile to cover!

The more I look at the tiles the more beige they appear. I had thought they were more yellow toned but I think that this was the effect of the yellow carpet which I have now removed.

Flamed I have definitely thought of going blue/green with the tiles. I am horrible at visualising how colours will look once applied so have been scouring pinterest for inspiration but still hard to know what it will look like once applied even if you choose the exact colours! Must keep in mind 'what's the worst that could happen?'

Putting blue/green with the tiles that is.
