Designing home office

It's pretty clear now that my company will not be going back to ft office based work - we will be in the office maybe a day a week. So I'm thinking through how to convert our spare room into a permanent home office, which still feels like part of our home.

The problem I have is that I need a full PC (with tower) for the kind of work I do. But I can't see any nice desks which are designed to incorporate a tower. Without that design feature, I'm always going to have cables trailing everywhere, which drives me nuts.

Has anyone seen any nice, large desks for sale which are designed for PCs? Or know a joinery firm which makes them to order? I usually like mid century or warm Nordic style.

Try having a look at the old antique type things, the ones with the green leather in the top. Sort of thing solicitors used to use. They are designed for being in the middle of a room so have a nice 'front' to them

@LilyLongJohn - they are called partners' desks.

OP is you are willing to do some work, a second hand double pedestal dressing table could be adapted to house a tower (removing the drawers from one side) and often have a shallow central drawer where a wireless keyboard and mouse could live when not in use.
I realise that this would need to be against a wall though.

@HeyMicky that's a great idea!

We had an issue of too many monitors. DH and I now have desks that face each other, at right angles to the window.

Helps delineate the space, too - there is definitely an organised end if the room and an a...creative...end

Laughing...yes. I hear you! My DH is a gamer, which is (only one of) the reasons I am lumbered with a PC and full rig. Just feels like whatever I try, it looks like a teenage boy's bedroom.

This is very pretty - might be better with a Mac though? hausdirect.com/indoor/working/desks/bdi-modica-6341-wal.html

I don’t think this was referenced before but I’ve just got the John Lewis loft desk with drawers (second hand new from eBay). I tried looking on Etsy/ Heals/ other furniture and nothing works. The desk has got a raised bit for the second screen and holes for cable tidies. It’s not the most amazing to look at (I think there’s an Ercol version now) but it works really well. The main part of the desk is extendable as well for extra keyboard / note book space.

I have my desk in our small guest room which is also doubling up as a dressing room at the minute. Fits in really nicely.

Thanks @AppleTree16! That's nice looking but ideally I want something that can stand in the middle of the room. It's interesting you have had the same problem - I wonder if in a year or so, someone will have spotted the business opportunity and be making different models that work. I am surprised they arent already!

How are you planning to get power to the desk in the middle of the room?

Snowdrop30 · 15/09/2020 18:59

I could do run it at right angles to the wall, so the power cable would run through the desk and then to the plug at the wall. Or if I went for a 'free floating' desk, I could maybe follow the tips on this site? kelleynan.com/hide-computer-cords-when-your-desk-is-in-the-center-of-the-room/
