Ceiling colour

We're just about to start decorating our nursery and we're going for an off white - white cotton by Dulux...my question is, should we paint the ceiling the same colour or stick to brilliant white for the ceiling? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Brilliant white.
But... if you did it in the same colour it will be easier, and it is white, and you'll not need to buy 2 paints.

Stargazer87 · 03/09/2020 08:52

I know, that's what I'm thinking, in terms of ease having it all the same colour would be best however I'm just not sure if it will look strange? On the other hand you might not even be able to tell the difference as white cotton is quite white!

When I moved in here, a bedroom with a fairly low ceiling was painted a mid-blue all over.

I painted it all white, brilliant white on the ceiling and an almost white on the walls and it took a few coats. At least with the white cotton it won't be hard to paint over if you hate it.

Nice colour choice and it should last a few years, so no need to worry about repainting.

We have white cotton on the bedroom walls and the ceiling is brilliant white. There is a noticeable colour difference.

BeKindItCostsNothing · 03/09/2020 09:23

I'd go with the BW then. You'll not be repainting for a while so you might as well get it right.

Actually, it might be Egyptian Cotton. Scrap what I just said. There’s still a noticeable colour difference.

FindingNeverland1 · 03/09/2020 09:35

Ceiling will look better brilliant white.

areyoubeingserviced · 03/09/2020 21:31

Ceilings should always be brilliant white

EmpressoftheMundane · 03/09/2020 21:36

Normally ceilings should be brilliant white.

However, if it is a small room, like a box room, and the walls are a very pale off-white, painting the ceiling the same colour might actually make the room seem bigger.

Stargazer87 · 03/09/2020 21:50

I think it's an old fashioned view that ceilings should be brilliant white...

I think it’s more common than old fashioned. Most of us live in modest homes with fairly low ceilings. Painting the ceilings white tends to work better than anything grander or more creative in most cases.

Colours other than white are just as traditional for ceilings. For instance, where I am from it is traditional to paint front porch ceilings blue.

If it helps I live in a 1900's house and so the ceilings are higher than average...

I think what the OP is asking is this: if you're painting your walls a white other than bog standard brilliant white, would it then make sense to paint the ceilings in the same white so as to have a seamless line between ceilings and walls?
I've been pondering the same question 🤔

WotsitWiggle · 04/09/2020 08:36

We rented a flat where the whole property was painted in an off-white, walls and ceilings. It looked fine. It probably would have looked weird if the ceilings were PBW.

I've found it ...

EmpressoftheMundane · 04/09/2020 09:12

@NotABeliever, I think the answer is yes. I’ve done it in two different houses and was happy with the results. One was a box room, the other a loft conversation.

I found this interesting

Ceilings can be whatever colour you want them to be!
