Ikea wardrobe vs bespoke built in

We have a dressing room to re-fit. It's a good sized room - rectangular, not awkward corners.

Currently in the process of decorating prior to geting some new wardrobes in .

Priced up Ikea PAX - nice sliding doors, a combo of drawers and hanging. To date we've got the price up to about £1,400.

I just wondered if anyone had a very rough figure of how much it would cost to get a bespoke fitted wardrobe made - before I get involved in call ing them up to come round, measure up, try and up-sell me.

Pros - someone else delivers it and builds it! ( I spend a lot of time putting together flatpack)

Cons- might cost a lot more (we have other building works going on too which are a ££ )

Thanks

I had mine built by a local joiner for £1330 across one wall including the chimney breasts. It's not painted yet though.
The pros are that I didn't do it myself and it fits exactly to my Victorian terraced uneven walls. I was also able to think about what I wanted the layout to be and design it so it is floor to ceiling.
I googled loads to get ideas and dimensions Including the best height for tails etc. I'm very pleased with the results.

Rails! Best height for rails!

I used old carcasses and ikea doors in my dressing room. We then had a joiner/carpenter fit them and add moulding. It turned out well but it still wasn't cheap. Our quote for bespoke was more than double though.

Fitted wardrobe specialist companies are expensive - you'll pay £2k or more

If you can actually get a tradesman across your threshold then a decent carpenter should be able to do something cheaper

You could get a carpenter to build and fit Ikea wardrobes plus any mods/hacks/extras. It will still be cheaper than bespoke. There are so many clever interior fittings in the Ikea system, it's hard to beat.

I had bespoke wardrobes built in by a local wardrobe company. Ikea units would not have fitted completely against my wall with chimney breast and I would not have been able to do the Ikea build myself and finding someone to do it is a pain.
My estimate for Ikea was the same as yours and the company charged me £3,200 for the bespoke. A big company would be around double that. I'm in London. It maybe cheaper elsewhere.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have discussed with DH and we think we're just going to build the IKEA ourselves. It's a 3.5m long room so is probably not a bad price (plus we've put in lots of drawers which are the expensive items).

As I said the walls are straight so no awkward wasted spaces.

Can't wait to have somewhere to put my clothes other than on the spare bed.

Might get it delivered though rather than cramming it in the car..

You can have the ikea ones built by their tradesmen. I have no idea how much it costs or how God they would be though.

We used Ikea carcasses & interior fittings, then got a joiner to "hack" them (sloping ceiling, adding top boxes / moulding / filler panels to make them floor to ceiling & fit the space. Ordered bespoke doors online.

Still not cheap but much cheaper than the big fitted wardrobe companies (Hammond etc).
