I am getting shutters in my sitting room and have a quote for wooden shutters that is the same as the quotes that I have for MDF.

This is a big expenditure for me and I want to get it right... what do you think? Is wood superior or does it not really matter? TIA

I have one window with half height shutters. MDF I think they look perfectly fine - that said i think where i got mine from the wooden ones were more expensive - I would phone a few places and ask about wear /arping etc - i.e. any pros and cons ) and if nothing ereally then just down to look )

Sorry not terribly helpful but good luck

That sounds great OP, I’d love shutters. Like you I don’t know the pros and cons of each but I think I’d prefer wood in this damp country rather than mdf.

I’d love to buy a kit and assemble my own but the prices are extortionate. I just can’t afford fully fitted by a company. So if anyone has any tips on where to buy all the bits ready cut to assemble....?

Wood is surely best.

I have wooden plantation shutters.
They were slightly more expensive than mdf.
I think mdf is recommenced for bathrooms.I don't think there's much difference visually.

The advantage with MDF is that it is consistent. No knots or grain to show through the paint. You’ll not know it wasn’t wood once it’s painted.

Whilst wood will always be/ feel more superior to MDF the reality is it is more susceptible to heat and moisture, and can be inconsistencies in grain knotting etc. MDF (medium density fibreboard) is manufactured so has none of the floors of real wood, if your going for a natural look then wood will look best but if your going for painted shutters you won’t see any difference for the extra cost of wood
