Bedroom colour help for a clueless person

We are moving into a large Victorian cottage style house next week. Project 1 is the master bedroom. It's big 24x13 with north and west facing windows on two walls ( door and en suite on other two). I am looking for a colour scheme that is fresh and airy, maybe a bit 'sumptuous' but still 'countryside'. The only limitation is that this sofa ( it's not our usual colour, bought four years ago for a playroom but I do quite like it) needs to be accommodated. Furniture is a mix of white painted wood and natural oak.

Can anyone help me with wall/ curtain/ cushion/ bedding/ lighting ideas? I really need help with colourscheming. I'm wondering about an off white (cooler toned?) on the walls, white bedding, saffron velvet cushions, some sort of quilts (or throws). I have a very, um, limited eye for colour and design so any thoughts are most welcome.

If you want a country feel I'd go for white or creams with taupe and pick up on the teal of the sofa in the pattern on some cushions or even a throw/bedspread. Using the same colour for mounts for pictures or small accessories would look great. If you introduce mustard I think that's more Scandi than country.

Thank you Wowfudge - I wouldn't have thought to go for taupes etc. I'm now wondering about a blue/ taupy stripe for the curtains too. I do like Scandi style a lot so it wouldn't be a problem to veer towards that. Our current house is pretty Scandi.

Teal and mustard together look really good too. With the sofa being velvet then different textures will give the room a luxurious look - things like cotton bed linen, a knitted throw, tweedy cushions.

Ooh, now that sounds lovely. I think a nice mustard cashmere (budget allowing) throw on the bed ( no cats allowed!) and mustard velvet cushions .

Thanks so much Wowfudge, I like your ideas. you've encouraged me to abandon project 'packing' and nip down to the curtain shop in the village 😁

I think that sounds lovely, @wowfudge. I wonder if cream would be better than white because of the partly north aspect?

BoogleMcGroogle · 21/08/2020 16:14

onlinelinda good point. I've sent for some lovely fabric samples. One is a watercolour botanical in subdued teal and chartreuse. But the background is grey. Maybe a warmer cream ( House White?) rather than a cooler white or grey. The other is an insane bright botanical print with kingsfishers. It's gorgeous! Not sure I'm rich/ brave enough but I do love it a lot.

Ooh...I love kingfishers! Please could you tell me the name of that material and the company. I'd love to be brave with curtains and have a spare room to do up...so I could try it.

If you find a fabric that's gorgeous but over budget, you can use it for cushions or a headboard rather than curtains. I saw some FB posts this week about a local artist who does some stunning prints of birds, including one with kingfishers.

Good point about north facing room. I think white is okay with strong, warm colours, but off white and creamy shades can give a warmer feel. Some darker colours can just be killed by being in North facing rooms - it saps the life out of them.

propervexed it was a Cole and Cole ( botanical?) fabric. I'll see if I can find it, if not I'll send a picture when the sample comes 🙂

Here it is. Clarke and Clarke and ( I suspect) hummingbirds. But gorgeous! clarke-clarke.com/product/woodstar-tropical/

That's beautiful!

Thanks, @BoogleMcGroogle . It's very lovely...but, as you say, humming birds.
