decorating a toddlers bedroom for occasional use

My nephew who's just turned 2 is coming to stay with my parents (with his parents) on a fairly regular basis - once or twice a month.

There's a box room free which has a single bed and a single wardrobe/drawers unit there and recently has had floral blackout curtains fitted.

My DM wants some ideas re prints, colours for the room. New bedding.

I think either pastels or maybe more primary colours to fit in with pale green/white curtains.

Nightlights? He also needs a side to the bed so he doesn't fall out, any suggestions - she doesn't want to get rid of the bed.

He has a ton of toys downstairs so no need for any of those upstairs!

I was suggesting some shelves like he has in his own bedroom for books, photos, trinkets etc.

I'd go with a bright neutral colour like magnolia (maybe with an accent wall in green or teal or something?) then get some wall transfers for decoration as these can easily be swapped around as the child grows without having to redo the room every time. Lots to choose from online (Alphabet, numbers, animals, vehicles, dinosaurs, fairies etc).

ah perfect - thank you so much! Have no idea - not got kids and his DM and DF don't do this.

I agree with neutral-ish walls and some age appropriate wall stickers are they grow up quick and change their taste. Add colour and interest with some appropriate bedding/colourful blanket and accessories. A little bookshelf would be nice, room for some books and maybe a few action figures/soft toys. Stick a few of his drawings and maybe some photos on the side of the wardrobe or on a pin board.

All you want really is to make it cosy and welcoming without being too busy if it's really for sleeping in rather than playing.

Neutral walls, a bookshelf that 'things' can go on like a few age appropriate books, games, toys. Framed age and interest suitable prints to make it more his style.

Use bedding and a small rug like a toy car road one to kiddie it up, that way if they want to use it as a guest room for someone else they can just change the bedding, roll up the rug and it's ready.

It's also easy to age up over the years.

Dunelm have a series with dinosaurs which might fit the bill and match with existing decor

This is the stickers and they have bedding to match

That's a really good idea - then it can be used as another bedroom.

Was thinking maybe a picture rather than transfers - any idea where to get nice kid friendly pictures?

My DM did have some lovely older prints - one of a child with sailing boat and one of a fairy market with goblins and animals which SIL found creepy so those can't go up.

Sounds like you've found a theme then.

Next usually do some nice stuff:

You could always put stickers in frames if you'd prefer?

Jamhandprints · 21/08/2020 11:47

I'm sure Amazon will do lots of nice kids canvases.

Jamhandprints · 21/08/2020 11:47

You can also get a side for the bed from amazon. Just search "toddler bed guard".

Yes, we used to take them on holiday with us.

Prints in a frame rather than stickers. Easier to change out, super easy to print off stuff from the internet and stick it in a frame. Children are impressed by small things Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 21/08/2020 14:24

I never had one but as far as I've seen, the guards just have legs that pop under the mattress and a side bit that folds up and down to stop them rolling out.

You can also get bedding where the the top sheet is attached to the fitted bottom sheet and has a zip for access. That also stops them rolling out.
