I love house plants and have a few but I would love some decorations ideas and photos if you would like to share. Most are supposed to be placed in bright indirect sunlight but already used all such spots in my house. Thanks a lot.

Try some that don't need as much light? Mine are all the hardest to kill type for that reason...

I have dracaena sanderiana (lucky bamboo), Dracaena marginata (dragon tree), spider plant and calathea for mildly shaded spots in my house, all doing well

Borderstotheleftofme · 02/08/2020 21:13

Oh and weeping fig and anthurium too!
And Christmas cactus though I regret buying them, I was swayed by the gorgeous pink flowers in the shop but they’ve never flowered since and are rather ugly plants actually.

Succulents like bright sun. Also my yucca does well in the sunny spots.

Or are you looking for shade loving? Ferns?

What are best suited plants for the bathroom?

My maidenhair is very happy in my bathroom as is an ivy and a succlent.
Calatheas love a mist/sprits of water so will like it.

My bathroom gets sun for first half of the day.

I'm the opposite - I need a good recommendation for a plant that thrives in direct (sometimes hot) sunlight. I seem to have collected a lot of shade lovers!

daisychicken · 05/08/2020 09:30

@TheoneandObi Begonias like bright sunlight but prefer not to have direct sun but if you have net curtains at the window, they will be fine. Jade/money tree is also fine and I have spider plants also in direct sun. String of pearls and staghorn ferns also do well.

Plants for low light include sansaveria and aspidistra.

Plants that like light but not direct sun or too close to a window include peace lily, tradescantia and orchids. Can also have spider plants, string of pearls and staghorn ferns in these conditions as well as sansaveria and aspidistra.

I've found moving plants around depending on time of year works for me. So winter, early spring and late autumn, I often have most plants near/in windows and then the rest of the time I move those that don't like bright/direct sun away. Apart from the peace lily as they are drama queens and it stays where it is happy! 😂

Peperomia and pilea also like to be close to windows but not direct sun. I have pilea, spider plant and monkey tails in the bathroom.

OP I live in an urban jungle and have probably about 50 houseplants. I also propagate (grow) my own from cuttings.

If you are new to houseplants, I would suggest one of the hardier plants that are very hard to kill. Snake plants and ZZ plants don’t need watered a lot, in fact the ZZ can go months if you forget to water it.

Pothos plants are another variety that are great for a beginner, particularly the golden pothos. It doesn’t need much light although it thrives in bright light - the leaves will change colour and become variegated in bright light.

For a bathroom you are best picking a plant that thrives on humidity like a peace lily or fern, but ferns can be a bit tricky to get a good balance with at first. The peace lily is much easier. So are Spider plants - they go great in bathrooms or any room really and very easy to maintain. They also throw off baby spider plants to grow into new ones.

If you go to an Aldi and Lidl you will find amazing plants for £3.99 - £5.99 every Thursday, try the mornings if you can as when the new plants go out and they get snapped up.

Remember though that you will kill a houseplant more if you overwater it than underwater. There are great tips on Pinterest for caring for plants. Whenever I get a new one, I usually save some pics and info on care to keep me right. Reddit have an amazing houseplants sub where people share help and care tips, photos and the people are not cliquey.

The PP who wanted bright light plants.
I have crotons and they do fantastically.
One even flowers!

Orchids seem to do well in bathrooms. My mother in law buy them for me on all occasions so I have a bathroom full now

Pothos are great. They thrive in shaded areas.
