Cork flooring

I was searching for child friendly flooring and came across cork. Cork seems to be a very good option for a house with a young child but for some reason does not seem to be popular.
I personally do not know anyone who has cork flooring in their houses.
Just wondering if someone on MN could share their experience with cork flooring.
DP is very much pro carpets and against hard flooring.

We have it in our bathrooms as we didn't want cold tiles. No issues, so long as it's well sealed. It's been down over 20 years and still looks fine.

We have in our kitchen - really like it.

I’m assuming you’re not talking about 1980’s Concork tiles...?

TiddleTaddleTat · 31/07/2020 08:53

We have these and really like them. Reminiscent of the 1970s but they have a nicer pattern and installed like laminate. www.wallsandfloors.co.uk/forest-bark-cork-tiles

Very eco too

How hard wearing is modern cork flooring? Considering it in the hallway but not sure if it would be suitable.

Porridgeoat · 02/08/2020 07:20

We were going to go for cork but went for bamboo instead.

ivykaty44 · 02/08/2020 07:21

I had it in my previous bathroom, which was tiny - thank 6ft by5f so not much floor space. I purchased ready sealed cork tiles and stuck down

My father purchased unsealed and varnished to seal, & varnished & varnished & so it went on

So that’s my advise
Purchase ready sealed

My parents had in our bathroom when we were DC. They had it revarnished every couple of years (family bathroom with 4DC so it got very heavy use) and it looked good. Suspect it might still be under the current flooring. I think cork is gorgeous (and environmentally friendly).

We had it in a rented house in the 70’s and put it down in our first purchased house. It was in the kitchen, dining/ sitting room. Kids were little and soft to fall on. Easy to clean and warmer than tiles under foot.

I don't know why it fell out of fashion, it's great stuff. You can also get it in paler white or grey tones which are more in keeping with today's tastes.

riotlady · 04/08/2020 16:43

Can you chip bits out of it like a wine bottle cork? I’m terrible for picking at things, feel like I would be absentmindedly gauging holes in it with my nail

TiddleTaddleTat · 04/08/2020 17:46

@riotlady the stuff we have (linked to below) is already lacquered/varnished and doesn't dent or chip no

picklemewalnuts · 04/08/2020 17:56

I had it in my bedroom 30 years ago. It became my parents spare room to hasn't had huge use, but it looks as good as the day it went down. I love it.
