It used to be my marvel obsessed son's room but will now be used as our "spare room" for foster kids. We could get boys or girls or a sibling group and they are likely to be any age from 0-early teens.

I'm really struggling to find something unisex. I don't want it to be too bland and drab or look to clinical. I'd like it to be cheery and bright. I quite like muted/pastel colours but they all seem quite girly to me.

The room isn't massive (10ft x 12ft) and the window is quite small so it can feel a little dark. I'd like the colour scheme to make it feel a bit bigger and brighter if possible.

All of our bedrooms have two colours on the walls (as you can see this one currently has blue and red) so I'd like this one to too.

Sage green is a very calming colour and also goes well with a range of accent colours, so that would be my suggestion. You could then mix it up as needed with small accessories in whatever colour fits well with the children or teenagers.

Not sure about wall colour, maybe duck egg type colour which is neutral.

You could get different colour of bedding and then let the children choose when they arrive with you? That way it would personalise it for them and you don't have to worry about trying to have 'girl and boy' colours. FWIW I don't like pink for girls and blue for boys, but I can imagine a young teenage boy arriving and sleeping in a pink bedroom might not go down very well.

So neutral walls, and a variety of bedding to choose from.

Pale eau de nil, it’s like duck egg but on the green side.

Also a fan of the eau de nil - you can brighten the room with throws and cushions and a rug.

I’ve seen it styled really nicely with a bright yellow or magenta but you could get away with almost anything.

Actually sage green isn’t exactly the colour I was thinking of...maybe more like an olive green/khaki, but not too dark.

I work with children/teens. We always paint it white so it looks clean and fresh, then let the child choose the colour for 2 walls.

Grey and yellow are fashionable and unisex.

Not my child's room but this has been done in mint macaroon by Dulux. I have actually used this in both my children's bedrooms, boy and girl, at different times and it works really well as a unisex colour. It's actually nicer IRL than in this picture! Really lovely, calm colour, and would go nicely with an off-white maybe on the other walls. Then you could add little flashes of brighter colours here and there in accessories.

Thanks you all. I'm going to get some samples of the suggested colours up and see how they look.

Agree with eau du nil or duck egg, would look lovely and very appropriate for all ages and genders—would have colour but not be overwhelming, and also very relaxing. I don’t think there’s any need to do a wall another colour, but if you really want to then maybe just stick with white (the room doesn’t need anything dark). The room needs brightening, no dark wall would be good and would you consider painting the furniture white? Wouldn’t take a lot of time but would brighten, and also would go great with the colour scheme. Also mirrors to help bounce light around to brighten the room would be great.

Personally I’d go for plain white. It’s a small room to bedding, blind, etc in something relaxing, and textures to make it feel welcoming (eg fluffy rug, beanbag, bed runner, whatever).
Then if someone wants posters or dartboard or whatever it’s very easy to repaint.
