Painting house to sell

We’re having a quick tidy up our house this next week (or two) as we’re trying to sell in time to reserve a new build, there’s more than one if the house we are after so fingers crossed. My bedroom is currently dark blue, the estate agents have said don’t bother painting as it’s a bright room, white ceilings and wardrobes and white above picture rail. Would this put you off as a seller? I’ve also bought pebble shore for our south facing living room, I’m unsure whether to do the room one colour or add some colour to the alcoves? If we miss the new build we will be staying so kind of want to do it for ourselves too,

Our house is on the market - we could have done with fresh coat of paint in living room but the estate agent said it isn't enough to put buyers off and they would want to put their own stamp on it anyway..... we are reserving judgment slightly and will do some odd jobs if we can't sell!

Personally, I am not letting decor put me off a property - if it has the space and potential we can do our own thing to it.

Oh I completely appreciate that but it was grubby when we moved in and we haven’t had chance to do it yet. We only bought 2 years ago so need it to look different to the pictures really.

Ah I see! Well if you can paint it I don't think you have anything to lose. It just wouldn't personally put me off.

Ours is a little grubby round the edges if you look closely but I'm 8 months pregnant and my husband is working really long hours so it would be quite difficult to sort unless we really needed to.... I do feel bad though because we are perhaps shooting ourselves in the foot by not doing it.

Good luck!! I really hope you get the property you want!!

Dark blue in a bedroom wouldn’t put me off, sounds really nice!

For the living room I would go one colour for ease and for a blank canvas - if you end up staying and want colour in the alcoves you can always add it later.

The estate agent I went to said not to bother painting.

However for the houses they were selling that were freshly painted the brochures always highlighted this.

I wondered if they just said not to bother as that way I’d put my house in their hands quicker. If I went off to paint I might take forever and never get round to coming back to them...

Who knows.

I’m repainting the white next time. Id touch up walls but wouldn’t change colour schemes unless it was hideous. Buyers can do that themselves. It just has to look clean. No scuffs in the paint or marks in the walls.

Our estate agent also said not to bother even though we have a load of paint samples on the walls. It didn't put anyone off and we had two offers before the house went on the market officially. If our buyers moan about it in the coming weeks we'll paint the room magnolia.

A house not being freshly painted wouldn't put me off. I'd rather put my own stamp on the place.

Yeah I get that but to be honest I’d be embarrassed at having it in the market as it is. Plus we may find it hard to sell due to the neighbour so we need to make the house as nice as possible, whether that’s to wow someone or for us if we have to stay.

I think it depends on local market & price point tbh.
Last time I sold there was so much demand estate agent said it was a waste of money because it would sell and new owners would do it in their own style anyway. It did & they did. We didn't even fully declutter for pictures on her advice.
At the moment in my area there are a lot of new houses & flats in various style & the market seems a bit slower so I might consider it.
Dark blue bedroom sounds lush to me so I'd leave it. Isn't dark blue trendy now in a post grey world anyway or is it all pastels??
