Taking doors off kitchen cupboards

Anyone done this?
Planning on doing this to 2 cupboards in the kitchen. Paint the insides and make them features.

Before I take the plunge has anyone any pros or cons I should know about?!

My worry would be making it hard to clean as open cupboards will attract dust and grease in the same way open shelves do in kitchen.

SisyphusDad · 25/07/2020 22:12

Everything will end up being covered in grease.

00100001 · 25/07/2020 22:13

Good good, why? Confused

You'd have to keep them very neat and so much more cleaning...

OhioOhioOhio · 25/07/2020 22:13

Yeah, sorry, sounds awful

GreyishDays · 25/07/2020 22:15

We’ve always deliberately included open shelves in kitchens that we’ve put in. One was a bookshelf, underneath was some bright vintage china. Oh we had a plate rack on one too. Looked lovely. It wasn’t dusty or greasy at all.
So I will say your idea sounds great.

Pros:
They might look nice
Cons:
-things would have to be just so to look nice.
-The stuff and shelves would get dusty, dirty, greasy etc
-You'd have to answer the same question every item someone new saw them 'oh, where are the doors?'

  • Can't just shive stuff in there when you need to tidy up quickly because your friend is popping round.

I agree with the majority.
Like the way 00100001 put it.

GreyishDays · 25/07/2020 22:21

I really don’t think it looks odd! Like this:

@GreyishDays

I really don’t think it looks odd! Like this:
But they're shelves.about 30cm deep .. a book case depth. Not a cupboard with no door iyswim?
00100001 · 25/07/2020 22:59

And it's shallow because of the wall/bay window thing, the counter is only half depth, so not deep enough for a 'proper' cupboard (otherwise there'd be one there!

Liskee · 25/07/2020 23:24

Not so worried about grease tbh. We do have shelves in the kitchen and they're not dripping with grease or covered in dust....I'd say my usual weekly wipe would prevent that.

I was worrying about the having to keep things 'just so' though. Defo deserves deeper thought! ThanksSmile

Cupboards without doors will look a hell of a lot different to open shelving, op! It'll just look shoddy and unfinished.

colouringindoors · 25/07/2020 23:49

I have a shallow double cupboard without doors that I use to stack everyday plates bowls and mugs in. Looks nice and is v user friendly.

Saz12 · 26/07/2020 21:37

You could just try it and see. Keep the doors you’ve removed I case it doesn’t work out and you just want to put them back on again!
I’ve shelves and a plate rack, which work fine because the things on them are used often (and therefore washed often).
I don’t wash my storage jars that often so imagine they’d get greasy if they were out on display.... I’m not sure tins of supermarket own brand beans would give the effect you’re after...!

doingitforthefrill · 27/07/2020 09:37

I agree with PP - what’s stopping you from trying it out then if you don’t like then just put the doors back on?

I have open shelving in my kitchen, where I store herbs/cook books/ glasses and plates and they are never greasy or dusty..
