So here’s my next extension which is to be a kitchen diner. It’s North facing but gets good light.
My hub and I are arguing about a really trivial paint quandary but it’s really bugging me so I’m begging you all for a bit of advice to settle this!
I am painting the whole room in Dulux Timeless which is a warm creamy White which always looks warm, now here’s the sticking point.......
I think the ceiling and coving (still to be fitted) should be all the same colour as the walls ie Timeless whereas OH reckons the coving and ceiling can only be pure Brilliant White.
Help us please 😂

Your husband is right

lifesalongsong · 19/07/2020 08:37

You are wrong about the paint and wrong to use the word hub (are you Christine Hamilton) Grin

Serendipper · 19/07/2020 08:41

Timeless is super super pale, I would happily paint the ceiling with it as well. It’s way lighter than pointing for example.

I’m not sure other posters have understood quite how light timeless is. You would be finding it hard to spot which bits were white and which were timeless!

I love timeless and have painted a few rooms in it!

LilyLolo81 · 19/07/2020 08:42

We have the same kind of room OP and we’re doing the walls and ceiling in Timeless. Why? Because I’m doing the painting and I’m lazy Grin Cannot face all the cutting in a pure white ceiling would involve.

HeronLanyon · 19/07/2020 08:43

Can’t see any coving and I too wouldn’t install it in this type of room. I agree with dh - ceiling white. I would do whole room white as it will be full of colour from kitchen stuff presumably - the warm white is sounding faded to me BUT I have just spent a few hours scrubbing down my white kitchen walls to paint (Not white this time) and am slightly obsessed right now with how good they look clean and whiter.

Hollyhead · 19/07/2020 08:44

I’m lying in my bedroom which has timeless on the walls and pbw ceiling and every morning I wonder why we bothered cutting in thee ceiling as you can barely tell the difference - timeless all over!

We have , and have had, a lot of Timeless walls. Always white ceilings, coving and skirting.

TornadoOfSouls · 19/07/2020 08:52

I wouldn't bother with coving unless it was a period house with architectural mouldings. I feel the standard curved stuff is a bit 80s now.*

Yes. Don’t bother with coving and paint the lot Timeless. Easier, quicker, cheaper and will look much better.

A brilliant white ceiling can absolutely kill the wall colour.

Smidge001 · 19/07/2020 08:58

Your DH is right

OffThePlanet · 19/07/2020 09:04

I agree with your DH, the ceiling, woodwork and coving white. Otherwise it’s too much of the same.

1000mangoesinabirthdaycake · 19/07/2020 09:09

My ceiling, coving and woodwork are in timeless, so I agree with you. It's a soft white. More forgiving than PBW.

porkandbeans · 19/07/2020 09:14

We have timeless on all our ceilings and woodwork. It's white but not as harsh as pure brilliant white. We don't have pure brilliant white anywhere.

It makes the rooms warmer. We have a range of neutral colours on the walls.

Treasure440 · 19/07/2020 09:21

Totally amazing!
You lot are the font of all knowledge.

I have told DH he is right and he looks suitably smug.
Thank you all so much 😍

Agree with your DH.

Neither of you are ‘right’.

It depends really on what you want to do. And it probably depends on what type of coving. If it is a plain coving I would probably paint it the same colour as the ceiling, however if it is quite ornate I think you probably have more options.
If you want to make the ceiling look higher probably paint the coving the same colour as the wall.
If you want to make the room look fairly modern and calm you might decide to paint it all one colour.

I am currently painting my living room. And I’m going to have some ornate coving put in. I will be painting the walls picture rail coving ceiling ceiling rose all the same colour (which is slightly off white grey type colour). And then the skirting and my shutters will be pure brilliant white. I wanted to bring an element of calm into the room but I also love my shutters so I wanted to pick them out with a slightly lighter colour.

Farrow and Ball have a book ‘How to Decorate’ which you can probably borrow from the library. It explains all the different things you might want to do and why are you might want to do them. I’ve found it pretty useful for ideas although I’ve not used their paint!
