Help with varnish/staining correction

We’ve just moved into a new house. In the living room - the main window is set within a ceiling length wooden frame/panelling. (See pics).

There seems to be a bit of a bitches job in the bottom panels. Any idea how i would go about correcting without redoing the full thing. If I do just need to do the whole thing - I’m not sure whether to keep the wood look or go for a colour? The skirting will be dark grey (dupe f and b railings). Considered railings for it too but fear would be a mammoth task! Any expertise would be much appreciated!

That’s a sand and revarnish job op. I’d buy a sander for it. Not just mess with sandpaper. I’d also say you need to do the whole thing inc window frame so it matches,

Thanks so much @Bluntness100 - I have a sander from doing window sills previously. I won’t be able to do any damage will I?! Any idea if I’d need a primer?

I think it would look nice to paint just the wood panel bits underneath in the same colour as the skirting. Up to the bottom of the windowsill.

@RingoFlamingo that would certainly make my life so much easier! Although what about the whole outer frame? Leave that or do it same colour as I’m painting skirting?

Actually yes, if you can be bothered the outer frame painted too, I think. It looks quite fiddly, good luck! Oh and I think you will need primer, but I'm no expert.
