What does your dream bathroom look like?

I’m trying to design our new bathroom, and really struggling for inspiration. What would you go for?

I’m thinking of metro tiles in a soft pale blue, with crisp white walls and lots of shiny white bathroom furniture.
Or maybe beige split face tiles on one wall, with plain or stone style beige tiles on the walls and floor.

I have reached brain capacity and cannot think clearly any more. What would you go for?

Personally I’m hankering after a 30s style bathroom with a sunken tub, but that’s probably just me. Smile

Your beige idea maybe sounds a bit TOO beige IYSWIM?

The blue sounds nicer, maybe with retro chrome fittings?

Rosehipbrandy · 13/07/2020 19:31

Oooo. Sunken tub! That sounds amazing but probably where my dreaming needs to end and real life takes over (before I end up with a bath shaped bulge in my living room ceiling!)

I see what you mean about the beigey-ness. Might be a little bit like being inside a biscuit. Not that that is necessarily always a bad thing...

I love eltham palaces bathroom with the gold mosaic

I love marble and black fixture and fittings, huge and minimalist. No bottles of products in sight.. huge rainfall shower with windows onto a private area of oustanding beauty or direct ocean views. I like kim kardashians bathroom. (You did say dream bathroom 😂)
Photos of eltham palace and more realistic bathroom styles..

Have just done two bathrooms (well second is mid-tiling), and bought from Topps (because it’s one of the places actually open mid-lockdown). We bought shalford for our bathroom (very pale grey tile) and paired it with a mid blue on the walls and dark blue vanity unit (but it’s a very light and bright room). In the other we have chosen Topps Attingham in seagrass - a lovely pale blue/green variegated tile. We have a very light grey floor and will have pale walls. We have opted to have large walk in showers in both rooms and just the one bath.

We recently did our bathroom. Dark grey metro tiles, light grey wood effect cabs, chrome fittings and whitewash wood effect floors. Planning the downstairs toilet now. Navy wood effect cabs, oak floor (same as whole of downstairs) light grey walls and funky reclaimed blue vintage tiles as large splash back.

We (I hope) only got a few days left and our is completed your idea may not be a million miles away from our. We choose these wall tiles having looked at 1/2 million tiles from the cheapest to eye wateringly expensive hand made one, we live in a very old house and liked the fact that they were blue but looked a bit old and rustic, I personally don't like the bevelled edges on metro tiles. Everything else is white or chrome. Its a wet room DH's choice so the sink and loo are wall hung, and both have very "clean lines" and are white and the sink taps are also wall mounted because I love wall mounted taps and I think they are a bit art deco in design and we will have massive rainfall shower.
We've also put in underfloor heating as well as a radiator, very good extraction hopefully to prevent mould, the lights are on a movement sensor so will come on automatically as you walk in, ( I hate those light chords hanging down), the door slides into the wall so isn't taking up space in the bathroom, and the mirror is heated so hopefully wont steam up.
I love everything art deco including those green/black tiles you find in an art deco bathroom and spent a long time considering this but eventually decided not to do it.
We bought all the bathroom fitting for CP Hart they may not be the cheapest but their advise and service was brilliant.
My DH works in the top end money is no object design industry. He would tell you that the things that make your bathroom (or any room for that matter) stand out and look really good is 1. the attention you pay to the detail and that includes how things are placed in relation to each other, the sink the loo even the wall lights radiator and towel rail, have been meticulously positioned to the nearest mm. For example how the tiles are positioned on the wall; ours are in exactly the right place for the taps so that the handles are in exactly the same place on the tile either side of the spout and come out of the middle of the tile, how the sink is positioned in relation to line of the tiles, the floor tile in the door way has been cut in half so that the join is exactly half way across the the door threshold all this takes very careful planning and is time consuming and 2. unless you planning to move in the short term always buy the best quality you can afford when it comes to taps sink loo etc they will last longer and simply look better. Our bathroom fitter says that good quality bathroom fitting will last 20+ years easily. This is another reason not to go for a too whacky design e.g. I saw that coloured sinks black or red or green are very fashionable at the moment and why in the end we didn't do with the art deco green and black especially as we don't live in an Art Deco house but a very old cottage and I just didn't want in 5 years time to think why did I choose those tiles?
Before making my final choices I looked at 100's of bathrooms on line, in restaurants, hotels, friends house etc and would photograph things I liked and things I hated. I visited loads of tiles shops and had endless samples. I'm usually very decisive but I have never felt so confused or sent so much time agonising over fixtures and fitting as I've spent trying to design this bathroom.

MiniTheMinx · 15/07/2020 08:11

I prefer warm colours in the bathroom, so I'd probably go for the cream idea rather than blue and stark white. If I were to have tiles I'd choose something matt, or go for stone or slate.

I'm probably not much help. I like this, no tiles or chrome in sight!

I know is this is boring but I think when your designing a bathroom a major consideration is how easy is it to clean. I’m not an obsessive cleaner by any stretch of the imagination but tiles on walls and floors are very easy and quick to clean. I can se that rugs on the bathroom floor might look great but for most of us it’s totally impractical.
I considered marble/slate/granite but we were strongly advised against it for a wet room floor.

Rosehipbrandy · 15/07/2020 18:46

This advice is all fab. I’m off to the shop tomorrow with our builder so decision time is pretty much upon me!

I’m hopeful I can hold off on final decisions re tiles!
