100% Wool Carpet and a dog?!

Hello,

I wonder if anybody can help me! I have a dog. And I need a new carpet. When I first started looking I completely disregarded 100% wool. However I've had some contradictory opinions from carpet sales people and I wanted to see if there was any real experience that I could draw in!!

I much prefer the 100% wool carpets, and one man said that they were a natural fibre and therefore easy to clean. Am I mad to consider getting a wool carpet and having a dog? Does anybody else have one with the dog? Can you shampoo them? Any help would be greatly received.

My dog is not particularly messy! And the carpet will be in a room that we don't use as much. But I would like the option to shampoo it if necessary.

What about an 80% /20% mix which would be easier to maintain, imo?

I had a 100% white wool carpet in my bedroom as a teenager. It was lovely. But no dogs were allowed on it. I did burn it when I left my curling tongs on it one day...

Wool shrinks so you’d have to be careful cleaning? They usually tell you to do a test spot first when using a cleaning machine.

Thanks! Yes that's part of what's caused the confusion. One of the sales people in carpetright said that that was a possibility. But then a salesperson in Tapi carpets I think it's called said that that wouldn't be an issue and that they can be professionally cleaned with a carpet shampooer. It's a bit confusing!

We've had our 100% wool carpet down for over 20 years (we will be replacing it next year because the colour no longer suits)!

However, we've had dogs, cats, a child and never been precious about walking around with no shoes on indoors - so it's been well used. It's been spot cleaned, vaxed, professionally cleaned and still has life left in it!! Our next one will be 100% wool. Only thing I would caution against is white as you will see stains if you can't get them out 100% (although following manufacturers instructions will help).

I had a gorgeous lavender grey 100% wool carpet in my lounge. Dog very rarely went into the lounge, to be fair neither did we. I was cleaning the room and my girl came in and started making the retching sound and was sick everywhere. I wasn't quick enough to get her out.

Suffice to say nothing removed the stain, including a professional clean. Carpet cleaning man said never get wool with kids and dogs. I tend to agree with him and have since only had rugs on my hard floors. Both rugs and hard floors are scrubbable Grin

I had had wool carpets in an apt. We were fussy about removing shoes at the door as it was a very pale natural colour and showed dirt easily.
I washed the high traffic areas pretty often. I found the carpet fibres pulled from frequent washing and in places, particularly the hall and around the edge of the sofa, looked worn in comparison to the rest of it. While I really liked it, it was impractical and I ended up replacing it with wooden floors.

I think it also depends on the pile.

I’ve been looking at a wool rug on Dunelm recently and so many reviews complain that the threads on the rug look ‘brushed’ after frequent vacuuming.

This is the rug, I know it has probably more to do with the texture, but the reviews reminded me of how the apt carpet looked in high traffic areas.
