How would you "dress" this window?

I have in mind full length curtains to hide the unattractive metal pipes going down to the floor on either side. It's a wide window, and with full length curtains the drop will also be substantial! So, made-to-measure is going to be very pricey.

But, I can't find any ready made curtains that will be suitable - they are all either too short or not wide enough! What do people do with windows like this?

Any ideas would be appreciated, or links to readymade curtains that are wide and long! Thank you!

Have you looked at Dunelm?

If still not wide enough then you could hang two sets of curtains. I’ve done this in my dining room and you really can’t tell and they look nice and full.

Personally I prefer curtains on a window like that to hang just below the sill. Long ones would block heat from the radiator. But it’s just my preference.

DrowningInPaint · 10/07/2020 20:05

Thank you - two sets of curtains is a great idea and it never occurred to me! They do need to be full length to hide the pipes. I have a few pairs of full length curtains in the house already, and strangely enough although they are all in front of radiators, they don't block the heat. I've no idea how that works!!! The rooms are always cosy in winter.

I don't like the look of sill length curtains so I guess I'm lucky my floor length ones keep the rooms so warm. I'm going to investigate buying two pairs so thank you!

What’s the drop required OP?

DrowningInPaint · 10/07/2020 20:35

Drop is 230 cm
Width is 213 cm Smile

I would move the curtain pole higher up the wall and then as a PP has suggested use two pairs of curtains for the width. Ikea curtains are all 250cm long.

Fatted · 10/07/2020 20:50

I was going to say Ikea curtains

I'm sure dunelm also do longer than 90" in certain styles. I've bought curtains recently and definitely saw really long ones somewhere!

Fatted · 10/07/2020 20:52

Have you also looked at door panels? My mum has really long windows in her house and has bought door panel curtains before now for hers.

Smallsteps88 · 10/07/2020 21:35

90” is a pretty standard drop length so I don’t think you’ll struggle to find ready made. It’s nit as commonly bought as 72” or 54” so some stores mightn’t have it on the shelves but it’s always worth asking. Or if ordering online it’s usually an option in the drop down box.

DrowningInPaint · 10/07/2020 22:05

Thanks everyone! I will have another look online. Yes, I did find some that would fit but they weren't the right colour. Any that I liked weren't available in the size I want. Two pairs of curtains is my best bet I reckon.... door panels is a thought but they will presumably be quite narrow. Would like to avoid moving curtain pole too - I can't do it myself and can't get anyone to do it for me at the moment!

The drop you need is the standard 90 inches, that would be 228/9cm in new money. The small gap between the curtain hem and floor is preferable anyway; curtains won't hang properly if they touch the floor.

As far as the width goes I don't see why you need two pairs.
The width you need is 213cm. Again, standard wide width curtains are 90 inches and that is the width of each curtain. So one pair of curtains, ungathered would be more than twice your required width.

Eyelet curtains just slot onto your current pole, pencil pleat ones you can gather exactly to your required width and will be full enough.

Plenty of 228cm x 228cm ready made curtains on the John Lewis website.
Plenty more at Dunelm - some even wider (284cm each curtain.)

Or have I misunderstood?

Amymone · 11/07/2020 10:56

'Fake' long curtains either side to hide the pipes and a nice blind on the window

DrowningInPaint · 11/07/2020 14:21

Anymone thank you, good idea, I did consider this. I have dress curtains and blinds in one other room. However, getting a blind for this room is a) more expense and b) would involve someone coming in to fit it which is not possible at home at the moment (shielding).

I'm going to go with what rosegoldwatcher says. I think maybe I've calculated wrong somehow. Perhaps I've been confusing the measurements of one curtain with the measurements of both or something..... Confused

We have similarly sized wide bedroom window and the 90 x 90 curtains from Dunelm are fine. Loads of choice on their website.

Madcats · 11/07/2020 14:34

Have you tried looking at IKEA for blinds/curtains etc. ?
I think you might kick yourself for covering that radiator in the winter.

EasilyDelighted · 11/07/2020 14:40

I'd go with the fake curtains and blinds. You don't have to have someone in to fit blinds, we measured and ordered ours (Venetian) online and fitted them ourselves, it was quite straightforward.

user1497787065 · 11/07/2020 14:44

Bespoke full length is the only way. Never scrimp on curtains. No-one ever notices cheap carpets but cheap, I'll-fitting curtains stand out a a mile.

giantangryrooster · 11/07/2020 14:51

As madcat said ikea is good with long curtains.

Would like to avoid moving curtain pole too - I can't do it myself and can't get anyone to do it for me at the moment!

Fair enough, that’s very understandable! In which case if you use pencil pleat curtain, put the hooks into the lowest row of pockets. Having more curtain above the pole gives the impression of height.

Tlollj · 11/07/2020 16:02

229x 229. Is a standard size curtain. You should be able to get these anywhere.

didireallysaythat · 11/07/2020 16:57

Dunelm made to measure? You can book a telephone appointment online and they had a sale where you only paid for the material

bouncydog · 11/07/2020 17:18

I had fabulous ones made from an online supplier - they sent loads of swatches and were a lot cheaper than stores made to measure such as John Lewis and M&S. Once I'd measured up and sent the details they came in around a week. I'm sorry but I can't remember the name but suggest you look online and then try and get some reviews.

DrowningInPaint · 12/07/2020 11:38

I'm suddenly finding lots of 90x90 readymades which is great. Did I put the wrong measurements in before or something Confused??
I love bespoke full length and all my other curtains are just that, and interlined as well. However this room is just a study, which is being done up with possibly going on the market in mind. I'm not going to push the boat out here.

Regarding covering the radiator, sill length curtains just channel the heat up behind them and to the window, I find. I never find full length a problem heat wise!

You just temporarily forgot that the label on the pack is the width of one curtain.

Laura Ashley have reduced the cost of their ready made curtains substantially. For example only - these from £250 to £100 in the size you would need...

WhattheFishappening · 12/07/2020 12:30

Buy
228 cm (90 inches) drop
228 cm (90 inches) Width

The drop is only 2 cm short if your measurements and won’t be noticeable.

The width will be fine - you’ll just have slightly fewer gathers as each curtain is 228cm.

WhattheFishappening · 12/07/2020 12:32

Our windows are the same measurements!
