Hi, we’re about to start thinking about redoing our en-suite bathroom. Pictures attached. Please help! I don’t know where to begin tbh, it’s such a horrible room currently.

Constraints are: I want to keep the position of all the bits (loo/sink/shower), DH wants a non-wooden-looking floor, and... that’s about it! Oh, and DH wants to keep his stuff (shaving foam etc) accessible, ie visible, whereas I’m adamant it needs to stop living on the windowsill.

What would you do with this room?!

I’d have white everything, clean lines and classy, when I say white everything I mean. Toilet sink vanity unit, white glossy big wall tiles, we are having ours done in couple months, Silver grey flooring vertical rad, don’t want anything on floors, all will be hidden away in vanity unit, only thing on windowsill will be a nice plant, my accessories like towels etc will be quite bold

Have you looked at shower panels rather than tiles? We only had our shower redone (due to a leak) and the panels have really improved the look. Ours were these www.bushboard.co.uk/nuance/sand-lightning-fossil-813734. More expensive than tiles but cheaper to fit and easier to keep clean.

We've got a Roman blind in our existing hideous bathroom we've got issues with ventilation it's gone all mouldy. We don't really need a blind but if I was to put one up I agree put a Venetian one up easy to to clean etc.
Wet rooms aren't cheap to install, I'm ambivalent about having one but DH has always wanted one if money is limited I personally wouldn't bother, spend the money on fittings instead. I agree nothing on the floor we've got a robotic hoover (best thing we've ever purchased) and am planning to have a robotic floor mop when the bathrooms done so this another reason why I want as little as possible on the floor. You mention a non wood looking floor I'm assuming you mean tiles that look like wood I quite liked them least it looks ok in the photos. But DH thought they would date and looked a bit cheap and however good it is its obvious its not wood. We were strongly advised against real stone on a wet room floor/shower (by tile shops) and as lovely as white marble is does show marks you get these rust marks on it when it gets wet.
Oh and one other thing we're getting a loo hopefully so much easier to clean.

I have a ladder style shelving unit in my bathroom. Because the room is small it sits in front of the immersion tank door, but is light and easy to move should I need to access the tank (I don't). It's lovely for storing less pretty things in seagrass style baskets nearer the bottom, and having some of my luxury toiletries on display on the upper shelves. The bathroom scales also fit neatly underneath.

I would have an open basket style storage for my towels, but as there's no opening window I worry that they might get damp from condensation (plus I'd have to get some matching towels that fit with the bathroom decor rather than the ill assorted ancient ones I have now). But I always think having some beautiful fluffy towels that tone with the bathroom on display gives that 'hotel room' touch.

I’ll reply more fully in a bit - many thanks me for all the responses, so much to think about! I’m not sure about tiling the walls; what do you all think? At the moment only the inside of the shower is tiled, and that needs replacing tbh. The sink needs a splashback as currently the wall is getting ruined... what about the rest of the room??

My bathroom is fully tiled, navy blue below the moulding and white above. Half way is this kind of moulded ridge. It's a bugger to clean and I seem to spend half my time scrubbing the tiles. Plus, if I want to redecorate, I'd have to strip all the tiles off to change the colour scheme which would be pricey.

newbathroomforme · 07/06/2020 22:05

We're tiling floor to ceiling, DH wasn't as keen as I was but my bathroom is small and as we're tiling behind the walk in shower and round the sink so it seemed to make sense to keep going! It also resolved the problem of what to put above the tiles. The tiles are fairly neutral but not white (a bit clinical if they're floor to ceiling) so am hoping we wont be removing them for a long time. The alternative for a splash back is back painted glass, I've got it in my kitchen, you can have any colour you like, its super easy to install we glued it onto really knackered old plaster, covering it over completely and its so easy to keep clean you just seal it where is meet the sink/worktop.
When we do our other bathroom next year I am planning to put tiles behind the bath and maybe back painted glass a a splash back over the sink as the wall isn't totally flat and tiles would look weird.

Can you move the towel radiator? If you can, you could get a larger sink unit.

Personally, I always think of huge mirrors in hotel bathrooms so I would ditch your medicine cabinet. Maybe get a vanity unit with drawers underneath.

I also think of built in, tiled nooks in the shower (very well waterproofed) and for rolled up towels.

In the last bathroom I did, I've fitted a 300mm wide pullout kitchen larder unit. Lots of storage. If it was possible in your bathroom, I'd move the radiator, create a false wall with a larder unit floor to ceiling, fill the space between the outside wall and false wall with a granite vanity, use one layer of tiles above the sink all around the u-shape you've created, and have a mirror cut to fit the space between the top of the tiles and the ceiling. Above the tiles on the side wall can be painted. Install a shaver socket and spotlights above.

"Above the tiles on the side wall can be painted."
We decided against this because we couldn't decide what colour to put on the wall above the tiles. Bathroom wall currently looks like Elmer the elephant, but none were quite right.

newbathroomforme · 07/06/2020 22:54

With regard to lights I understand we're having four spotlights one in the shower one over the loo one over the sink and two wall lights (more decorative than for light) and they will come on automatically when you walk in as I hate those light cords hanging down. We currently have a conventional door but as the bathroom is small it takes up to much space so its going to be sliding "pocket" door; apparently it slides into the wall.
We're also putting a good size mirror over the sink thats the same width 600mm I think.

Mixingitall · 07/06/2020 23:02

I would go for shutters in the window.

With those vanity units, have you thought about marble floor and wall tiles?
