He's almost 6 and wants a "cool" bed. Think his friend has one but it would fit his room great as he has high ceilings, also it would create more space

Ideally I would want to buy one where whoever delivers it would be able to set it up correct too.

look up thuka
the beds are modular too, so that you can convert it to a higher sleeper or single bed later.

Buy him it, but make him earn it. If you don't discipline and make your children they WILL end up arrogant and psychologically crippled. Make it a reward for something he has done.

You sound fun.

before you get a high sleeper practice with dc to change bedding.
it's a right pita...

babycakes1010 · 31/05/2020 19:31

My dd had a high sleeper...lasted 8 months and all she done was complain...too hot up there etc changed back to a normal bed last week

mrnimmanimma · 31/05/2020 19:34

I make my children beg for their gruel every morning.

Make sure that you read reviews, ours are SO noisy!! Every movement makes them squeak and creak. we've tried tightening them but it makes no difference.

Really high, with space, a desk, seat etc underneath? look at Argos Brooklyn. Or the compact kind, with a wardrobe, drawers and desk? Argos something or other else!

Argos has a good range at reasonable prices. I don't think Ikea, Habitat or other shops had anything as useful, when I looked.

We bought a mid sleeper from the John Lewis 'little home' range and they assembled it. It's great quality. I think m&s also assemble furniture however I'd be doubtful that anyone will still be offering that service at the moment.

Dd had a high sleeper at around the same age and it was a nightmare to change bedding etc. And don't think they are space savers, they are not. Check your ceiling heights and whether the furniture underneath whichever option you pick is accessible.

I can't remember which brand it was but she eventually changed to a Stompa cabin bed and it was really good quality. I bought one direct from the website that was cheaper as it was last years model

My 5 year old has a mid sleeper from Great little trading company which they came and set up. He loves it (has a den underneath too for hiding his mess himself in). The quality feels really good and the guys had it up in about 20 mins! They also seem to have frequent sales which helps as they aren’t cheap!

Thanks guys. Didn't expect much response to this topic to be honest but kind of getting a "mixed review" on the whole.

He will definitely earn it. He does basic jobs now he is well behaved, does like a moan but he knows that will be IT for this year. Will look at all the suggested sellers tomorrow. I'm still not sure if he would make much use from a mid sleeper as he is quite tall.

We got DS the Ikea reversible bunk bed, and built it with his bed up on top so he has a den underneath. I haven’t got round to it yet but I’m going to make him some curtains so he can literally shut himself inside. He has to share with his younger sister so I wanted to give him some privacy.

We put a large four tier shoe rack underneath for all his Lego boxes and books, plus put some shelves up, and got him a large bolster cushion. It’s completely his own space.

JassyRadlett · 06/06/2020 15:55

We’ve got a John Lewis mid sleeper one and a second on the way for our younger, they’ve been great.

We paid for assembly for the first one. For the second, they aren’t offering assembly at the moment so we’ll be doing it....

Changing the bed is a pita. As is looking after a poorly child in one, not easy to just slip in next to them and give them a cuddle, and dont even start to think on how far vomit can spread when sprayed from a height. You also have to think carefully where things you need in bed go, like book and tissues and a drink.

Having said that both my DC's loved theirs. I on the other hand was glad when they grew too big for them.

ramarama · 18/06/2020 20:32

We just bought one from Room to Grow. £299 for a solitaire mid sleeper (bought a second mattress for below for sleepovers) Only had it a week but it feels sturdy.
The company were good, and quick delivery. They do set up for less than £100 - but can't do it right now due to covid (it took my ex 4-5 hours , to give you an idea)

I'm 5'6' and it's just about low enough for it not to be a pain to change the bedding. It would be if we had gone for normal bunk beds though. Added a hanging tin plant pot (the kind with a hook) for his water bottle to go in, but you can buy shelves to attach

Years ago my daughter had an occasional bed which lived under her bed. A little smaller than her single with a smaller mattress but ideal for friends to stay on. Easy to pull out and put up and comfortable. Less hassle than trying out a high sleeper and certainly easier to change the bedding.

LatteLover12 · 19/06/2020 09:05

We've got this Ikea one for DS and he loves it. We swung the desk round 90° so he's got a den/learning space underneath too.

You could always ask a local handy man to build it if you don't want to do it yourself?
