Dark grey in a bedroom? Would it look too gloomy?

Just put this wallpaper up in the bedroom. I wanted the room to be quite moody and goth-like.

But after putting the paper up, it's not quite how I'd pictured it. I think I could make it work by going quite dark with the remaining walls? To match the background of the wallpaper? Like a charcoal grey but would that make the room look too gloomy? There's a standard size window in the room and is NE facing.

I'll also attach pics of the sort of look I was going for.

I’ve just painted my dining room in Zeitgeist by Craig and Rose it is a dark warm charcoal black/grey.

It isn’t gloomy at all. It is Luxurious, bohemian, gothic and very cool. Even if I do say so myself!

I’m doing my bedroom in it next.

I think if the light is good, it will be fine. Otherwise you might just need a head torch to find your pants!

Zeitgeist is gorgeous ChristmasTree.

That's the type of warm dark grey I'm thinking of.

But not sure whether I should match to any of the greys in the wallpaper or just go for a grey that I like?

I could potentially just give up on wearing pants altogether? Wink

Definitely match as close as possible to the grey in the paper. It’s a very busy print and adding another colour to the room will make it feel busier still rather than calming.

Thanks punto

I like that you said that a darker colour can still be calming...this is the argument I'm having with my family. Their view is that a darker colour will just be gloomy but I disagree that it could still be calming as long as the colour ties in like you have suggested.

You should definitely match the grey in the wallpaper. And in a NE facing room which won't get much natural light anyway, you should go as strong and deep as possible. Love the purple with the gray. I could lie in there all day listening to the Sisters of Mercy and thinking about how no one understands me Grin

Hepzibah the struggle is real! Why doesn't anyone understand that I want dark, moody, goth AND calming!

Just been worked on by the fella to try "dusky pink" instead Envy (not envy) ! My mind is pretty much made up now I think.

I'm going to see if I can get some samples of dark greys and have a play around...whilst listening to Sisters of Mercy !

Try Farrow and Ball's Downpipe...a lovely dark grey in the bedroom

Agree - the wall in your second inspiration picture looks very much like Downpipe.

My sons room (was home office first) is dark grey called sleepy kitty with a statement wallpaper.
I've attached a photo of the corner, sorry it's a small section and the flash is on, ds in bed and couldn't turn his light on.

If you have any leftover wallpaper most Trade Decorators Merchants will be able to colour scan and match for you, if you want to be really bold, I LOVE a dark ceiling in a bedroom, even a lighter grey like polished pebble.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 29/05/2020 20:59

I think it is calming when everything is painted the same colour - ceiling, skirting, picture rail etc.

We did this for our bathroom roof, we matched it to the dark blue background of the wallpaper. Looks lush (south facing skylight though so very bright).

hey! noo I dont think so at all. I've recently updated my bedroom to a grey theme, but made it brighter with accessories. I was watching a youtube video and they decorated it with this tray.

So i bought it and added bright flowers, i think it just gives it that sparkle and homely feel.

Thank you everyone.

Sorry I haven't been back till now, work has been crazy busy.

I'm still dithering with this but finally managed to get myself to a b&q for some samples.

I had nearly talked myself out of grey and wondered if a dark plum might be less severe but actually prefer the greys in my pic.

Top grey is Valspar Charcoal sketch - the one I'm leaning towards.

Bottom is F&B down pipe which doesn't quite go with the wall paper ?

I'm going to pop second coats on tomorrow and see what happens

Try F&B Railings as Downpipe looks too light. The Valpar Charcoal looks good.

Please consider painting your skirting boards and doors/frames in the same dark colour. You need emulsion for the walls and eggshell for the wood but I love the final look.

IAteAllTheCake · 05/06/2020 11:57

Belinda it's the painting the doors and skirting board that I'm worried about !

I don't think I will get full effect and the look I'm hoping for without painting the woodwork but I'm a bit scared to do it!

With walls you can just slap another colour on if you get bored...might need to prime to cover a darker colour if going light.

Bit with doors and skirting boards, they'd have to be stripped and then repainted!

Also I'm planning to diy and worried about my skill levels!

So still dithering!

Oh definitely the dark. I’m not normally a fan of grey, as I find it really drab, but I like that. Much better than light or greige tones.

weepingwillow22 · 05/06/2020 16:08

I think dark grey on the walls would look better than the plum which might be a bit overpowering and not very restful. The colour in the wallpaper looks more black than grey to me though and would be quite a brave choice. Of the 4 colour swatches I think the bottom one looks best.

The room would work with lots of plum accessories. Also try to use lots of metal accents to brighten the space. One or more mirrors with a metal frame on the grey walls would help. I would leave most of the woodwork white, but maybe paint the door otherwise it will stand out too much.

CountFosco · 07/06/2020 19:13

Go with the darker grey. Agree with painting the wood the same colour and it that's too scary go for a pale pink or lilac, whatever the lightest colour in the wallpaper is. That would be a good idea for the ceiling as well, will look more deliberate than a white ceiling.

Also check out the Madabouthehouse, it's an excellent style blog and her whole house is pretty much grey and pinks/purples so will give you some inspiration.
